Would also depend on network status (connectivity), that is USB, Ethernet whichever it is or is available for that printer, that connection has to be working correctly to see the printer and give/get commands/results from such!
Some forum, problems (launchpad) issues with printing for HP 1100..Additionally if a specific driver eg 1100 is not working well, an option is often to use another driver in the same family, sometimes the next printer model/driver version or one below the 1100, or switch to purely open source drivers (cups + openprinting..)
--Internet search open printing would get the web site and some FAQs' etc.
