Local HP Printer won't accept jobs - Resolved

Postby TheGimp on Sun Feb 02, 2014 8:31 pm

Good day all.

I've been having printer problems since I started using this system. I can print for a while, then print jobs stop and the system reports it is not accepting jobs and all prints show up in the que as stopped. I could print a test page though. In the past I've been able to delete the printer, install it again and all would be fine.

Now doing so has no effect.

The printer is a local (USB) printer.

Here is my system HW and SW configuration:

-Version-
Kernel : Linux 3.2.0-23-generic (x86_64)
Compiled : #36-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 10 20:39:51 UTC 2012
C Library : Unknown
Default C Compiler : GNU C Compiler version 4.6.3 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.3-1ubuntu5)
Distribution : Linux Mint 13 Maya
-Current Session-
Computer Name : svenmini-desktop
User Name : svenmini (SvenMini)
Home Directory : /home/svenmini
Desktop Environment : Cinnamon
-Misc-
Uptime : 3 hours, 58 minutes
Load Average : 0.61, 0.61, 0.51

-Computer-
Processor : 2x AMD E-350 Processor
Memory : 4029MB (759MB used)
Operating System : Linux Mint 13 Maya
User Name : svenmini (SvenMini)
Date/Time : Sun 02 Feb 2014 05:14:47 PM EST
-Display-
Resolution : 1600x1200 pixels
OpenGL Renderer : Gallium 0.4 on AMD TURKS
X11 Vendor : The X.Org Foundation

I'm running cinnamon desktop

Here is what I've tried:

lpstat shows the printer accepting requests:

svenmini@svenmini-desktop ~ $ lpstat -a
Deskjet-D4200-series accepting requests since Sun 02 Feb 2014 01:40:51 PM EST

svenmini@svenmini-desktop ~ $ lpstat -p
printer Deskjet-D4200-series is idle. enabled since Sun 02 Feb 2014 02:49:27 PM EST
ready to print

But,

Administration – system information – printers – select Deskjet-D4200

shows : Accepting Jobs - No

And System tools – System Settings – printers
shows the printer on , default, and one active job.

When I select show, it reports the job state as Stopped.

The buttons in the lower left corner are grayed out and I can not select go, pause, or stop.

However, I can still print a test page.

Thank you.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Have you tried installing HPLIP?

I saw the threaad on it and when I followed the link and insturctions I got this:

"You have selected Linux Mint 13 using the HP Deskjet d4260 Printer.

Linux Mint 13 supplies HPLIP 3.12.2 and it does support your printer.

As the version of HPLIP supplied with your operating system supports your printer, you may continue to use that version of HPLIP.

You may now optionally download the latest version of HPLIP to get access to new features and bug fixes.

Please click Previous to select a different operating system or printer."

So... I did not download it since it states it is already installed.

On the off chance that it has an update that will help, I'll go ahead and get it. I would have expected the Software manager to have taken care of updates though.

I went to Software manager and searched on CUPS and it shows it is installed (green circle with check mark) when I view installed packages.

So,where do I go from here?

It looks like it is working now as I can print from several file types including PDF, an old version of Keil uVision (print Arduino files from it as it formats better than arduino), text files, etc.

However I still show one file hung up with one "Active Print Job" with a job state of stopped. The start and pause buttons in the lower left corner of the System Settings - Printers - Show are still grayed out, although the stop button is black.

How do I clear the hung file?

Thanks.

I started running the commands and when I reconnecting the printer it looks like it failed to reconnect, however everything after that seemed to execute properly. Here is where it looked like it failed.:

Re: Local HP Printer won't accept jobs

Hplip and the cups spooler work together, so the dependencies you got for the latter version of hplip (included cups), would have been ok to install if you selected the missing packages, for example the python development libraries.. (version)
Code: Select all
sudo apt get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

--before installing a package, or use a package manager to do the same (update OS, the install you new application
http://hplipopensource.com/node/128
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/in ... index.html

You may now have too many component parts messing up your clean install of hplip and cups etc..
--you could either remove those compnent parts and reinstall everything or I guess live with the results produced by those combinations, since it seems mostly to be OK for now ?
    By that I mena
    Cups
lp (bsd* printer functions), also usually installed
hplip (whichever versions you have installeded already
--basically look at you hplip application for dependencies, clean those parts/components out from the OS (uninstall) and resinstall the whole set again
That should get you closer to a clean set of packages, and hopefully (since HPLIP indicates support for that device/printer) will be a cleaner and less error-prone installed set..
