<Solved> mint 13 not printing on windows 7 printer

Post by mintstudent »

mint 13 32-bit
When trying to print from this machine to printer attached to windows 7 I am asked for password.
I have tried both my mint signon and password for the windows 7 machine administrator, but rejected.

What password is the message calling for?

Or is there something wrong showing up in the testpart?

Thanks for any help.

bill@bill-mint ~ $ smbtree
Enter bill's password:

Re: mint 13 not printing on windows 7 printer

It's looking for a username and password of a user who has access to the Win7 printer on the Win7 machine itself.

I'm assuming that this is the Win7 machine:
$ smbtree
Enter bill's password:
WORKGROUP
\\BILL-PC
Do the smbtree command another way:

Code: Select all

smbtree -U altair
When it asks for a password give it altair's password.

Change altair to a Win7 user name
That's the user name and password it's looking for.

BTW: I'm a little confused by this:
\\BILL-MINT\Epson-Stylus-C88 Epson Stylus C88 (ATTACHED USB WIN7)
Are you trying to share a Win7 shared printer from Linux?

thank you for the reply.
I am trying to print a document located in linux mint on the c88 which is attached with usb to the win7 machine.
I have tried user "bill" with the password for the win7 administrator .
I have tried user "bill-pc" with the password for the win7 administrator.
Also I can right now read documents on the win7 after using the "bill" username and the password for the administrator of the win7 machine.

I had set up the c88 an 5510 printers in linux mint.
I have made no changes to the c88 while signed on to win7.

bill@bill-mint ~ $ smbtree -U bill-pc
Enter bill-pc's password:
WORKGROUP
\\BILL-PC
\\BILL-PC\Users
\\BILL-PC\print$ Printer Drivers
\\BILL-PC\IPC$ Remote IPC
\\BILL-PC\Epson Stylus COLOR 740 ESC/P 2 (Copy 1) Epson Stylus COLOR 740 ESC/P 2 (Copy 1)

You've done every variation except bill-pc and bill-pc's password.

Tried again.
When I start printing, the name in the authentication msg comes up as bill, so I changed it to bill-pc and entered password for bill-pc with same result.

The more I read your posts the more confused I'm getting.

From smbtree:
\\BILL-PC\Epson Stylus C88 Series (M) Epson Stylus C88 Series (M)
\\BILL-MINT\Epson-Stylus-C88 Epson Stylus C88
Is that just a coincidence or do you have 2 printers? On what machine is this printer physically connected?
Also I can right now read documents on the win7 after using the "bill" username and the password for the administrator of the win7 machine.
You connected to a Win7 share and read a file stored there as "bill" but using some one else's password? And that worked?
Is there a "bill" on the WIn7 machine?
An who is the "administrator of the Win7 machine"?
And why didn't you use "bill" and "bill"s Win7 password?

Sorry about confusion....
There is only one c88 printer and it is connected by usb to the win7.
I did the add-printer on mint machine for the c88.
I thougtht that was necessary to select it when printing from mint.

There is another "bill" user on win7 who is administrator.
I have his permission to use his password in order to read/copy etc if necessary, but my main concern is to be able to use the c88 printer from the mint machine when necessary.
(There are other users without admin priviledges on win7.)

My user name on mint unfortunately is also "bill".

bill-pc is the name of the win7 machine.
There is a password on win7 for the home group.
I tried that, with both bill and bill-pc and they didn't pass either.

ADDED:
I just set up on mint a user named "test"
When trying to print from "test" to the c88 located on the win7, I am asked for the password for "test".
I entered that, and got msg in attributes for the print job NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME

Hope that clears the name confusion.

The key may be this post:
There is a password on win7 for the home group.
Homegroup and Linux don't play well together. You might want to look at the following HowTo:
Networking home computers running different versions of Windows: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... of-Windows

It doesn't require that you disable Homegroup but it makes it possible for something other than another Win7 machine to access things on a Win7 box.

I basically followed those steps in my own lan which consists mainly of Linux, Macs, WinXP, and one Win7 machine.

BTW, This wouldn't have worked in any case:
ADDED:
I just set up on mint a user named "test"
When trying to print from "test" to the c88 located on the win7, I am asked for the password for "test".
The dialog box isn't asking for the Mint's password for test. Whatever password you enter will be passed to Windows and on Windows there is no user called "test". So for this to work you would have to create a user named "test" on the Windows box and give him a password and then on Mint use that username and password..

Thanks again for your help. :D
Problem must have been with the firewall.

This is setting when able to print:
It doesn't completely tie in with the instructions from windows site.
