USB printer isn't detected in Linux Mint 14 Mate

Hi,
I have a HP G55 printer that I want to connect through USB, but whatever I do, no printer is detected.
When I boot from a Ubuntu 11.10 live CD, it works just fine. But nothing is detected at all in Ubuntu 12.04 and higher, and nothing is detected in Linux Mint 14 Mate 32 bit. I have installed HPlip. I have tried the CUPS web interface. I have tried to add the printer via the control panel. I have installed all available updates via apt-get. No printer is detected. Printer, cable and USB port must be working since it all works in Ubuntu 11.10.
Normal USB memory sticks work fine.
What am I doing wrong? Is there a bug somewhere? I have been searching forums and googled around but I can't find any answers. Does anyone have any ideas?
Regards
Bjorn
