HP Set Me Free

Postby TxLnx on Tue Apr 16, 2013 1:41 pm

I've been running Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon for about four months now, but had to keep Windows 7 for printing with my Kodak EasyShare 5500 that I couldn't get to work in Linux. Today I went and bought a cheap HP Deskjet 2512 AIO, downloaded HPLIP 3.13.4.run file from HP Linux Imaging and Printing website. Ran the auto installer from terminal following instructions on the HP website. It installed all the missing dependencies, except one--libcupsimage2-dev--which I had to manually install and re-run the installer. Other than that, it installed quite easily. I was even surprised to find that it also installed a GUI called HP Device Manager, even though the website said it doesn't have one. Both scanning and printing work flawlessly.

Now I've finally broken the last link in the chain keeping me bound to Windoz.I removed Windows 7 entirely from my computer and I'm running pure Linux Mint. No more GRUB boot menu. I'm free! I'm free! :D

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Yeah, I usually choose HP printers as they do tend to work with Linux pretty well. I have a 3050 at the moment which works well with Linux but won't work with Windows at all (it used to, but it just stopped one day and has never worked again since, I have no idea why). It doesn't bother me at all I don't have Windows installed, but my wife, who insists on using Windows most of the time, is not impressed, she has to boot into Linux in order to be able to print anything

(I did try fixing it for her, but I couldn't).

Where do I get that driver? How do I install it? I just bought the same printer for the same reasons. I can't wait to get rid of Windows 7, talk about invasive! Thanks, Mary
