Canon iP4850 problem.
Have just installed Linux Mint 16 but cannot seem to be able to install my printer, have tried to download the driver, but when I select the recommended driver nothing happens.
Can someone give me the steps I need to take, to get the printer to work, in simple terms please as I am no computer geek.
Thanks.

Find and install driver for Canon iP4850
Any thoughts on how i can install my printer - Canon iP4850.Note:
The question of how to find and install driver for Canon iP4850 has been split off from this thread: Updates fail? [solved]
and merged with a thread about exactly the same topic that you started 3 days earlier.
Karl
I use the Printers - local host facility.
In the add window select my printer, searches for drivers, comes up with guteprint free driver, select this and up comes the installing window and nothing happens.
Any thoughts on what i can do, thanks.

Find and install driver for Canon iP4850
Hello, Crackington.
The Canon Pixma printers can be a nuisance when it comes to driver installation. Even on Windows. A friend of mine had a Pixma printer that was so old that Canon did not offer any driver software for Windows newer than Windows XP. And he had just bought a new machine that came with Windows 8 pre-installed. No need to say that the Canon driver could not be installed on Windows 8.
So I am not sure whether Linux Mint brings along an appropriate driver software for Canon iP4850.
One approach might be proceeding like suggested in this Askubuntu thread: Does anyone know where to get printer drivers?. The essence is: finding a Canon Pixma printer in the list of supported printers which is similar to iP4850 and try whether that driver works.
Another approach obviously is:
Go to the Canon webpage, Find the printer page of Canon iP4850. Select to download the driver package for Linux (Redhat and Debian). Linux IJ Printer Driver - PIXMA ip4800 series Linux Printer Driver (debian & redhat) + manual
What you will get is a .tar archive file named ip4800_redhat_debian_guide.tar.
Inside this outer archive container there are 3 inner containers. (Matroshka principle):
What to do with the archive file guideip4800series-pd-3.40-1_en.tar.gz:
Use the Linux Mint Archive Manager in order to extract the inner folder iP4800series including its foder structure and files somwhere. You will then be able to read the installation instruction and the printer manual using your browser. Open the file guide_index.htm.
What to do with the archive file cnijfilter-ip4800series-3.40-1-deb.tar.gz:
You will find the instruction on how to proceed in the installation guide, see above.
Beware:
The installation instruction only mentions Ubuntu 10.04. This corresponds to Mint 9 Helena. This in turn may mean that the driver software provided by Canon is much too old and will not funtion properly. This may even mean that the installation steps will not work because 4 years have passed since Ubuntu 10.04 was released.
My advice:
Personally I would very likely try to follow the Askubuntu thread. Only if this fails I might try the ancient Canon software.
Final fallback approach:
If all else fails, I would curse the short Canon printer life cycles, their lack of adequate driver software and buy a new printer, not sure which one at the moment.
(I doubt I will ever find a printer like my now defunct Epson Stylus Color 740 which was supported on Linux and Windows for 15 years.)
Kind regards,
Karl

Re: Canon iP4850 problem.
not sure if you are still watching the forum; hopefully you "subscribed" to the thread asking for an email response; I wonder which driver you looked at:
Canon supply a driver
go here
http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/cont ... 01302.html
and you will download cnijfilter-ip4800series-3.40-1-deb.tar.gz; if you save it to your Downloads directory
the commands to install would be: (and hit enter after pasting in each command)

Re: Canon iP4850 problem.
Many thanks for your reply, have done all that you suggest but still printer is dead, when clicking on the printer icon it shows printer not configured.
Re: Canon iP4850 problem.
............strange..............
do you have more than one printer icon in the Printers Folder; (accessed from Menu............Preferences..............Printers..........)
ie has one previous install gone wrong, and could you be clicking on that .........
what does
.........we are probably assuming you have a simple computer setup: home computer with printer joined by USB cable to usb port?? ...........?? are you using a USB hub? are you sure the usb port works...ie try other devices in it?
what does
for me, I get

Re: Canon iP4850 problem.
so Roy you don't seem to have the Canon driver installed:
the install script is inside the cnijfilter-ip4800series-3.40-1-deb folder
open a terminal
paste the command
then paste
the install script is inside the cnijfilter-ip4800series-3.40-1-deb folder
so I suggest if you:cnijfilter-ip4800series-3.40-1-deb/install.sh
open a terminal
paste the command
..........that you get you inside the cnijfilter-ip4800series-3.40-1-deb foldercd Downloads/cnijfilter-ip4800series-3.40-1-deb
then paste
and that should run the install script ......any joy?./install.sh
Re: Canon iP4850 problem.
Still not working, in my downloads folder I have:
cnijfilter-ip4800series-3.40-1-deb.tar.gz
Use the othe two suggested commands and nothing happens.
Inside the item in the downloads folder is a file install.sh, click on run or run in terminal, enter password, starts to download script then terminal disappears!
Choose run and nothing happen
Looks as if I have problems.
cnijfilter-ip4800series-3.40-1-deb.tar.gz

Re: Canon iP4850 problem.
so the Downloads folder is exactly as I type it: is that so? as in linux downloads and Downloads are different:

Roy:roy@roy-Dimension-5000 ~/Downloads $ cd Downloads
it seems to me that when you are inside the Downloads directory .........having used the correct command
......to get there.............roy@roy-Dimension-5000 ~ $ cd Downloads
that you AGAIN issue the same command ..............ie
........and I am sure you do not have a Downloads directory......................inside your Downloads directory .........and that is why your computer gives you the simple answer it doesroy@roy-Dimension-5000 ~/Downloads $ cd Downloads
..........because your computer cannot find a Downloads directory ..................inside the Downloads directory .......................cd: Downloads: No such file or directory

so I think that is where you are going wrong:
________
so:
the right steps to me would be:
1) open a terminal
2) get into the Downloads directory: ie
3) then unzip the compressed file cnijfilter-ip4800series-3.40-1-deb.tar.gz with the commandcd Downloads
4) that generates a folder called cnijfilter-ip4800series-3.40-1-deb and we need to get inside that so the next command istar -zxvf cnijfilter-ip4800series-3.40-1-deb.tar.gz
5) and then being inside that folder, we use the install script and the command iscd cnijfilter-ip4800series-3.40-1-deb
sudo ./install.sh
