Hi Guys. Altho´I have used Linux for 10+ years, I have had a number of strokes and one episode of thrombosis, which have me somewhat disadvantaged, so please bear with me. Oh, I am 72....
I have a new pc - intel i5, 8Gb ddr3 fast ram, 500gb HDD, so there should be enough grunt for Mint16 - 32bit.
I have a Samsung ML-1670 laser, which I have installed using the Samsung web site download of the uld (unified linux driver) and I have tried several different ways of installing it. The crux of the matter is that when I set up the printer I get told to install ¨/uld/i386/rastertosplc¨ into /usr/lib/cups/filter and then print out a test page. It delivers fault report in the printer queue - ¨Attributes¨ as ¨filter failed¨.
I have every way I can think of (including reinstalling CUPS but with the same result.
In desperation I used the printer problems help pages on the localhaost setup page and invoked the debug CUPS service, which tells me that there is no realistic problem, and I should send the text of the diagnosis as a bug.
Please tell me how to do this.
The enfolding story of the where, when and how is recorded on the Linux Format ¨Help¨ forum.
I have been at this for 2 weeks now and I am exhausted.
Please help me to help myself.
Best regards
David

Re: Printer probs....
I may be on to something.
Scrabbling around (as I do) I found an oblique reference to registering my printer with CUPS and it occurs to me that this could be a reason for the filter failing.
Looking at http://localhost: 631/printers I find myself at the CUPS website and when I add/admin/printers it shows me the beast and and I can see above the details the message ¨state Idle,accepting jobs, sharing, default server¨. Below this is the detailsof my last print job which came to naught because ¨filter failed¨.
Maybe I should at how to be sure that the printer has been properly registered with CUPS, but I have no idea of how to go about this.
Can anybody point me in the right direction, please?
Best regards
David

Samsung ML-1670 issues
We had one of these printers: I am sure; and it just configured itself: gosh; you have had heaps of problems:
OpenPrinting is a good source of information on printers and printing in linux:
if one looks at a similar printer to yours;
http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Sam ... ng-ML-1650
they say pxlmono is a good driver and get it from here
http://www.openprinting.org/driver/pxlmono and you select the ppd from the list of printers;

shows how to add a new printer.........so you can specify a ppd file

so ..later on ....I have just plugged in our Samsung ML-2010 that had been stored in a cupboard; when plugged into Mint 14, a display appears saying: New printer being configured; and shortly afterwards: configuration complete (or somesuch message) and ready to print; and indeed it printed well from OpenOffice..........so just wondering if your system recognises the ML-1670 when plugged in; and turned on; and can configure the printer ..

Re: Printer probs....
we haven't heard back from you David;
I reported my ML-2010 installs well by itself. I see it uses
http://www.openprinting.org/printer/Sam ... ng-ML-2010
the splix driver; http://www.openprinting.org/driver/splix and I see (using synaptic package manager) it is installed for us;

in the UK site I pasted above, I note ominously in a review there "I do not succeeded to use this printer with Ubuntu. With Windows XP it works well, but in Ubuntu the unified Linux driver didn't work."

from here http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/prin ... 0/XEU-spec the ML-1670 doesSpliX is a set of CUPS printer drivers for SPL (Samsung Printer Language) printers.
I just wonder if installing splix would help you at allSPL (Samsung Printer Language) print emulation
