Lexmark S815 all-in-one scan fails from printer, Mint 17

Post by unkle »

Hello Linux geniuses! ('Fraid I'm a noob). I have installed a Lexmark Genesis S815 all-in-one printer wirelessly to my Linux Mint 17 64-bit system but one problem remains: I should be able to use the onboard display on the printer to order a scan to be sent to the computer. But the printer says that no "configured" computer is connected, leaving me with no starting point to fix it.
The installation procedure was to use the three 64-bit linux mint 13 .deb files [the most recent they have - and there will never be any update] on the lexmark support pages http://support.lexmark.com/index?locale ... ARK_S815#2, then apply quick fix to cure a print bug, found in this forum (do cd /usr/local/lexmark/v3/bin/, then sudo chmod 755 printfilter). Then I can print, I can copy from the printer (I mean, pressing buttons on the printer) and I can scan from the computer, using simplescan or xscan, for example. But it's most convenient to scan from the printer if I'm scanning lots of photographs.
I bought this printer because it scans in three seconds flat, whereas nothing else comes close unless you pay vast sums of money (this was £160). I should be able to stand at the printer, choose scan, and choose send to computer, but then we get the "no configured computer found" error. It even asks me if the computer is turned on! Lexmark technical help told me they don't support this printer now because they've moved entirely to laser printers (amazing lack of support) and the best they could do was tell me that an application is supposed to open on my computer when I say 'send to computer' - presumably xscan or similar.
I figure many other people must own this printer and some must be running Mint 17 and some of those must be really smart. Hence, this call for help.

from control center - hardware - printing
- is the Lexmark listed there?

If an application is supposed to open on my computer when I say 'send to computer' - presumably xscan or similar.
- that may be more of a windows O/S function.
as it needs some specialist software to operate that function.

you may have to, just stick with the scan controlled from the computer via simplescan, or similar.
- which is why my Epson is on a stand, - right next to the computer.
