HP LaserJet M1217nfw works only until reboot

I'm running Mint 17 as a guest OS in VMware.

I can print, scan, and so on after adding my M1217nfw. If I suspend (or, presumably, reboot) the VM, I cannot use the printer despite nothing looking obviously wrong. Similarly, xsane cannot find the device, whereas prior to suspending the VM, it worked fine.

Far better free(ware) scanning utilities in Linux as compared to Windows is the primary purpose of this VM. If I can't get this to work reliably, frankly, I don't know what I'll do. I don't want to drop 100 bones on something I can get in Linux for free.
