There seems to be no way to get my new Canon Pixma MG2950 all in one installed on Linux Mint 17... neither on network, neither with usb connection.
Also impossible via Cups http://localhost:631/, requiered internet pages are not found... strange.
I followed this tuto http://linux.wikia.com/wiki/Getting_Can ... k_on_Linux but no succes here either.
I'm starting to get desperate. I'm a Linux newbie. Most posts here I don't even understand...
Can somebody help me please?
If you can make me print I will consider you a magician for the rest of my days

Update: got it to work using the usb connection. Stil not working on the wifi network dhough. Unable to use cups, still cannot reach http://localhost:631/
Maybe I need to reinstall cups?
Maybe I need to reinstall cups?
Re: Canon Pixma MG2950 all in one, help wanter
The problem with Canon printers is that Canon don't make official drivers for use in Linux, pretty daft of them you'd surely agree.
However the download here might help you, http://driverdownloadsoftware.blogspot. ... linux.html

In every way canon can't be called Linux friendly.... True.
Canon Europe is now providing the requiered deb files, still only works with usb, network printing remains impossible.
Still can 't reach http://localhost:631/ maybe need to uninstall cups en reinstall them again?

Re: Canon Pixma MG2950 all in one, help wanter
so avasbroe; sorry to hear of the problems you are having;
as I understand it, if you want to connect any multi-function printer to a computer, (eg Epson, Brother,Canon...)
you need to do 3 things;
1) establish a direct connection between printer and router
2) install the printer drivers
3) register the printer on your system .............with the Canon and Brother install scripts that they provide for linux, this last step is done for one; if you use the installer script ........
______________________
1) establish a direct connection between printer and router
some devices have LCD screens, and one can thus let the device scan for the networks available; and when it finds yours; you can enter the password on the LCD screen; I think yours is the more pragmatic, where it offers only the WPS option;
many routers have the WPS system; whereby.......... you press a button on the device you want to connect (ie the printer); then you press the WPS button on the router; and it briefly allows nearby devices to join in by dropping security;
_____________________
Canon UK provide an excellent guide on how to connect many of their devices to a wifi network http://www.canon.co.uk/Support/Consumer ... ion_Setup/
..........the 2900 series is not listed yet; but if one looks at the MG3100 series, I wonder if the panel is not very similar or identical;
............. so the crucial step 1) must be carried out; I enclose a couple of thumbnails to assist
__________________
2) install the printer drivers
Canon used to provide individual linux drivers for each model of machine they produced; they provided a debian; and an rpm package; and the source code; in 32bit and 64bit variants; six in total; naturally that allowed folks to claim they provided no support;
Now they have moved to a standardised package for all; such as used for this new device; called cnijfilter2-5.00-1-deb.tar.gz and so it is a standard download for each of these newer devices; it comes in the 3 variants; debian and rpm packages; and source code;
one can easily get the debian package from the Canon Asia website http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/cont ... 26502.html
to use it, the commands in a terminal are:
cd Downloads
tar -zxvf cnijfilter2-5.00-1-deb.tar.gz
cd cnijfilter2-5.00-1-deb
./install.sh
so the final command runs the install script; it will ask for one's sudo password; and it will do steps 2) and 3) outlined above; namely fetch the appropriate printer drivers; install them and then register the device with lpadmin (linux printing admin)
............in doing that, it is doing it in the format but helpfully, does all that for the user.
________________________
so I have aimed to cover the steps needed; one should be able to check if one has a connection to the printer via the router with the command ...........
..............if one has, then one can check if the Canon drivers are already installed with and that command is asking the debian package manager to list any entries for cnijfilter (Canon pixma drivers) on the system..............if installed, well and good.............if not the guidance above should help install............

Re: Canon Pixma MG2950 all in one, help wanter
Thank you for the very clear guidance. Just the level of directions I need as a newbie.
I will try later on today when I find the time.
I'll let you know if it worked.

Re: Canon Pixma MG2950 all in one, help wanter
well that's great avasbroe;
thanks very much for getting back to us, and delighted to hear it is all going well; enjoy!

Canon also provide ScanGearMP which is a scanning programme to run the scanner; so it is completely separate from xsane; which is the front-end for sane; http://www.sane-project.org/ which is the open-source project to run scanners;
until the volunteers at sane can analyse a new model, what Canon provides will drive the scanner;
so get it here http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/cont ... 27102.html and it comes down as scangearmp2-3.00-1-deb.tar.gz so SAVE and should end up in the Downloads folder
to install, into a terminal paste these commands:
cd Downloads
tar -zxvf scangearmp2-3.00-1-deb.tar.gz
cd scangearmp2-3.00-1-deb
./install.sh
that will run the install script and install it; ................ok next ..................................how to run it? .................firstly type or paste this command into a terminal; if all is good, set up a launcher; google on how to; ie is it mate, or gnome, or cinnamon, or lxde or xfce or LMDE .............whatever is your desktop
thanks very much for getting back to us, and delighted to hear it is all going well; enjoy!
