Lexmark X5150

Postby DWBellows on Thu Apr 28, 2011 12:25 pm

I'm very new to Linux and I'm not a code writer in any form at all, so here we go...

I've installed Mint on my sister's computer and most of the set up was simple enough, but I can't get the printer to work at all.

It is a Lexmark X5150 AIO printer, and from what I've seen on the forums there's little luck of it working with Linux. However, I have seen comments about Dells sharing some of the drivers with Lexmark, so I'm hoping somebody can point me in the right direction to get this working.

Please keep in mind that I have no idea how to change a file's coding.

Any help would be appreciated. :)

EDIT: I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that I'm using Linux 10 Julia.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

This is what The Linux Foundation says about your printer:

Lexmark X5150

Does this printer work with free software?

No. If you are able to purchase a new machine, buy an OfficeJet, or a
suggested printer.

Another possibility is to configure for several different lexmark
printers, and hope that one works. Like a lottery.

Does Lexmark have drivers for this machine?

No. Their binary driver set does not support it.

Does scanning work?

No. You'll definitely have to write a driver yourself.

So how are your driver writing skills?

However there is this:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10384353

but it doesn't relate to the version of Mint you are using and it isn't easy, so it might not work.

I know it is difficult when you have an existing printer but as a general rule if Lexmark won't support Linux then as a Linux user why should you support them?

Buy an HP - that will work.
Fujitsu Lifebook AH532 Laptop. Intel i5 processor, 6Gb ram, Intel HD3000 graphics, Intel Audio/wifi. Realtek RTL8111/8168B Ethernet.Ubuntu12.10 (Unity), Mint14 (Cinnamon), Manjaro (Xfce).
