Just got this PIXMA MP495...

Also got a brand new laptop with Mint 12! Whoohoo, right? Well, anyway, I was wondering if there was a way I could download and install the driver for my new printer from the terminal, or will I have to manually find the driver online and then install it? Thanks in advance.

You have to get the driver from the canon website. Probably this guide will work for you also (as Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu): http://ulyssesonline.com/2011/11/10/ins ... on-ubuntu/

OK, I got as far as downloading the driver but the terminal can't seem to find that packages folder the Install Canon Pixma MP495 on Ubuntu page is talking about. Is there another way to do this?

OK...I found a file called "install.ssh," double-clicked it and ran it in the terminal. That seems to have done it...Duh, I guess.

Hi, hope I can still continue this thread as I've got the same problem.
I have an old laptop with Linux 11 installed and have spent the better part of this day trying to install a Canon Pixma mp 495. I tried the steps listed above, also tried letting Linux detect and install the printer, but all to no avail. Installing the package as suggested above shows the terminal, briefly, but just as briefly, it disappears. Plugging the printer into the laptop leads to Linux detecting it just fine, but after searching the database, ends up telling me there are no matches. A manual search shows the same. No matches. Please help, I'm due to travel to Africa early next week with laptop and printer and really need to get it working by then.

Hi, just want to say I've solved the problem. Turns out I was using the terminal wrongly (inputting commands from the wrong directory). Having figured that out, the rest was easy!

The model number Canon PIXMA MP495.

Method 1:
You may refer to the below links and use the troubleshooters. Check if it lists and helps resolve any issues: Open the Printer troubleshooter:
Canon U.S.A. : Support & Drivers : Consumer & Home Office

Method 2:
You may check if you have the latest drivers installed for the device. You may refer to the below link for getting the latest drivers and check –

I used method and everything was for Mac and Windows. They had a check operating system compatibility and Linux was on the in-compatible list. Only Mac and Windows were listed as compatible. I didn't use Method 2 because I've already downloaded the drivers and have the install cd handy. I'll look through search to see if anyone has some how to install steps.

so Mnicety: you would like to install the linux printer driver for the Canon Pixma MP495..........

.......if you go here.......

https://www.canon.co.uk/Support/Consume ... oad&page=1

and down the printer driver; you can see it says

Description:PIXMA MP495 series Linux Scanner Driver (debian & redhat) + manual

so the package contains printer driver for rpm linux systems and a .deb package for debian systems (eg Ubuntu and Mint)

looks like it is a 6.8Mb tar file

if you download it into your Downloads directory you can install it from there

my experience of installing an MG3160 was:
1)download file into Downloads directory
2) open terminal (Menu: bottom left: 3-4 up should be terminal: click)
3) type
cd Downloads
and hit enter if that is where the file was downloaded to
4) type
ls
and you should see the .tar file there
5) decompress it with the command
tar -xvf file.tar
where you change the filename to match the Canon.tar package
6) type
ls
again because it is likely the decompress command created a NEW DIRECTORY called canonmp495 or something similar: you need to GET INSIDE that directory
7) so when you have the name of the directory, type
cd canonmp495
........enter exactly what the directory name is and hit enter: you should then be INSIDE the directory
8) type
ls
and it will tell you the contents of the directory;
8a) there may well be a manual or read.me document: you might like to read that first
8b) but likely there will be a file called ./install.sh
9) what worked for me was to type the command
./install.sh
for the MG3160 and the install script decides if it is dealing with rpm or .deb packages; and installs the appropriate one;
10) if you printer isn't plugged in by this stage, the script will ask you to connect the printer: hopefully it will go as well for you, as it did for me.......

if that all goes well, I can talk you through the scanner install.......................
