Cant add HP printer

Postby Mr. Pants on Thu Mar 08, 2012 2:24 am

Ive been trying to add my HP officejet-all-in-one 4215 printer to Mint 12 Gnome. the printer will show up in the "add printer" area after scanning for hardware but when I actually click the add button it never gets added..... I have checked synaptic to make sure the hplip drivers are installed and they are. I have never had any issues using this same priner with several versions/desktops of Mint until now :-(

help will be greatly appreciated.

Try updating the HPLIP drivers manually. In most cases this helps solving most issues. There's an how-to for Mint:

Removing HPLIP drivers:

Installing HPLIP drivers:
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/linuxmint.html

And check this site also if some issues occur with foomatic:

thanks for the reply. Since I do not have the tarball to
Code: Select all
 sudo make uninstall
could I just remove them using synaptic? or is removing the hplip associated folders good enough?
And instead of using the install link could I just use the install script provided by HP to do the re-install?

In a terminal:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get purge hplip

ok, heres where I'm at. ran into several errors after running ./configure had no support for jpeg images, and needed to install several dev packages also. but now Im stuck. getting the error
Code: Select all
configure: error: cannot find dbus-devel support: No package 'dbus-1' found

searching synaptic there is lots of DBUS options to select and I have no idea what to install. even though it seems dbus is already installed.....

anyone have any ideas? the only reason Im even using GNOME3 is because I could not fine the "allow remote access" option in KDE, I asked in 2 diff threads here and never got a response :( I need a printer more than I need remote GUI access to my main tower at home. I cant stand having to fire up a XP VM and use it to print.....

figured it out....

type 127.0.0.1:631 into firefox

then add the printer from there and it worked.....

EDIT: to add that I didnt need to update the HPLIP driver either, this is with the original driver that Mint in stalled during installation. has to be an issue with GNOME3 or Mint..
