Domain name lookups failing (most of the time)

Postby lunasspecto on Mon Jun 11, 2012 8:33 pm

I'm currently living with my father, and he recently switched his ISP to Comcast. Since then I've been unable to resolve domain names on the 32-bit Cinnamon edition of Linux Mint most of the time. Occasionally, for no apparent reason, I get a few minutes where everything works fine, but it never lasts. The problem persists whether I'm using Firefox, Chromium, or Lynx. It also makes it difficult for me to run apt-get updates and upgrades. Oddly, I have no problem with the network when I'm using either Microsoft Windows 7 or the latest "Slacko" build of Puppy Linux. It's not that I have any trouble connecting to the wireless network, either, it's just that performing domain name lookups on the network usually fails. I've taken to doing most of my casual browsing in the Tor Browser, because connecting to web sites via the Tor network works every time. I would, however, like to be able to connect to web sites directly so I can use Flash and such things again.

I ran the mintWifi script and this was the output:

Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8)
utility, e.g. service smbd reload

Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an
Upstart job, you may also use the reload(8) utility, e.g. reload smbd

Anybody have any ideas? Sorry if I missed a post where this problem has already been addressed.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

You can try this and see if it helps:

"DHCP + DNS problems in Ubuntu 12.04"
