i keep losing net after 5-10 min using a web browser

Postby Jam-Jul Lison on Wed Jul 04, 2012 6:39 am

I am having a problem with my wireless. I just installed Linux 13 mate and have done all the updates. Now this problem was occuring before the update. Whenever I am using a web browser, after about 5-10 min I am suddenly unable to do anything on the net. It disconnects pigon as well. When I am not using a web browser though pigon is able to remain connected to the net and the net seems to be fine. I haven't had a chance to run mintWifi yet. I will do that later when I wake up. Too tired to load that computer back up at the momnt. I am currently on a piece of crap older computer I keep around for backup purposes. Though I am switching out the monitor and power cord as needed at the moment. What I use to connect to my wifi is a usb stick.

Linksys
Rangeplus wireless network usb adapter
Model No: WU5B100

Being sleepy when I looked at the numbers for the model numbers, it is possible I made a small mistake looking at it since the print is tiny. Now I do have the driver info and file thing that I always had to put on my computers that ran windows for this. Though I haven't put it on the one I am having problems with since it seems to not require it. Gotta say so far assides from this problem I am liking Linux Mint.

I would like to point out though that I am not 100 percent the problem is linux mint or even my wireless stick, Before I put linux on it, I had XP and had problems with a virus that did some damage before I could stop it. It would cause me after a while to be unable to access the net and cause some visual problems on the windows themselves. Such as the tops becoming transparent and font in yahoo messenger becoming invisible. So far though the only problem that I am having now is the net seeming to drop out after 5-10 min when using a web browser. Though the odd thing is the wireless signel indicator appears to be fine when I look at it if I remember right. I am pretty sleepy and gave up working on the pc hours ago and didn't bother to check the net again on it. Was attempting to book up an XP USB Installer. Unfortunately i messed up my attempt at making one of those. A lot harder to do it for XP then Linux. I would use my XP disc but the cd drive is shot. That is one of the reasons I opted to go ahead and give Linux a try in the first place. Anyways I am off to bed. I will check back later when I wake up. I will also run that mintwifi scan thingy later when I wake up. Provided I can figure out how to do that. Still a newbie with linux.

WUSB100 uses Ralink rt2870 drivers. You must download the tar.gz file containing the source for the drivers off of Ralink's website, then compile and install it.
Here, follow this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=907809

I don't really understand much of what is being said on that forum or any of the others the forum links to. I was checking on my linux though and went and checked the drivers. It showed the driver I had on there was a rt2870. Maybe I need to reinstall it though or something. I don't really know anything about Linux. Or maybe just default linux ones show up as that. I have no idea if that is so. I am going to go ahead and download the driver but unsure which thing to download. Here is the list I found on the Ralink website.

Follow the readme. It has all the instructions.

I am attempting to make sense of the instructions in the readme but I don't really understand them. Like I said I am new to Linux and I am not sure what any of that means. I have used windows all of my life so I am used to simpler installations then this. Do you by chance got yahoo or windows live? If so maybe you could help me out on there and walk me through it. My yahoo is jam_jul-lison@yahoo.com My windows live is jam-jul@hotmail.com . I am switching back to my main computer now to try to work on this. I will make sure to stay connected to those accounts using pigon. As long as I don't use any of the web browsers it will maintain it's net connection. So if you can help out on one of those, feel free to contact me. If anyone else can help with this, your more then welcome to help me as well. I need all the help I can get.

Scratch that idea. I can't even get it to read my wireless usb stick now. I am going to have to try to wing this and figure it out. I wish the instructions made a little more sense to me though. Some parts I get. Other parts are downright confusing.

I am about to just give up. The step of the instructions in the read me doesn't make any sense to me at all.

Jam-Jul Lison,
it is not a good idea to post private email addresses on a public forum
It would be best to edit that information out of your post

I am so desperate for help with this problem that I don't care who has those. If anyone harasses me on them I can simply block them. As for being hacked. I have never once in life had any of my stuff hacked. Not saying it can't happen. But my accounts aren't easy to hack. I do appreciate your concerns though.

Could someone at least help me understand what the first step in the build instructions?

1> $tar -xvzf RT2870_Linux_STA_x.x.x.x.tgz
go to "./RT2870_Linux_STA_x.x.x.x" directory.

The rest of the steps I think I can manage to get through but this first one I don't understand at all.

All those X's are version numbers. See the downloaded tar archive? it says RT2870_Linux_STA_2.4.2.5.tgz <--example
What that bit is saying is just extract the archive, you don't need to use terminal for this. Right click > extract here
After extracting, go inside that directory and continue following the instructions.

Ok I did that but I can't really understand everything else to do. I try but most of it is just confusing for me. Is there some way someone could possibly do most of this for me and then send it to me or something? If you need information about my pc I could send it to you. Not sure if there is some way to get all the needed info from the machine. Still clueless on most of the linux stuff. But I assume there is some way to do that since it was possible to do on XP.

Linuxmint has its own IRC channels. All you do is open the MintMenu > Xchat
You will automatically be connected to #linuxmint-chat and #linuxmint-help where there are more than 100+ people at all times--I'm sure one of them will gladly walk you through the install process. I'm available on Mint's less stricter channel called #pimpmymint (which is mostly active during the daytime, with around 40 people)...I stopped going to the #linuxmint-chat and #linuxmint-help rooms because they are too overcrowded and questions are almost always drowned out.

When the readme says change directory, it means do that in the terminal.
Ex: When you open up the terminal, you are initially in the /home directory. If I have a folder called Videos inside my home folder, to change to that directory from the terminal I would do "cd ~/Videos"

It is hard to walk me through anything if I can't stay in constant contact with them. Maybe someone could make a simplified version of those instructions for idiots like me. Before this I thought I was pretty good with computers but now I am not so sure.

I managed to get my hands on a 2nd monitor so I can have both computers on at the same time. I went ahead and downloaded mIRC. How do I connect to the linux mint channel from there. I don't got much experience with IRC. I always preferred instant messengers. I really need to solve this problem and hopefully someone on the IRC channel can help walk me through this.

For the server, it's: irc.spotchat.org
For the channels, it's: #linuxmint-help, #pimpmymint

Tech support on IRC (just like the forum) is provided by unpaid volunteers, therefore it cannot be guaranteed to be available 24/7.
Late on a Friday night (early hours of Saturday morning in UK and Europe) is probably not the best time - try again in a few hours

Not sure if this is against any forum rules or not but I am going to go ahead and post the read me build instructions. I will leave out the first step since that got answered. I understand bits and pieces of this. But not enough to actually do this. I showed the readme to a friend of mine that lives out of state that used to use Linux back when gnome1 was around. He recognized the programming used in the readme for what it wants me to do but he can't really understand all the directions himself. He said they were poorly written which I kinda got to agree. Step 3 in particular really threw him off. Any help that can be given on making sense of these would be appreciated. I really want to get this done by tomorrow. Anyways here is the readme and I am going to go off to bed. Yes I sleep during the daytime lol. I will check back later when I wake up and hopefully I can get this taken care of once and for all.
