3G modem disconnects instantly

Postby 3*10^8 on Thu May 31, 2012 10:16 am

I'm very new to Linux Mint 13, before I used the "Katya" version though. I've an happy experience with the new Mint 13 Maya except one case, that I'm disconnected from internet always!

I use a Huawei 3G modem (E352) to connect to the internet. I didn't have to worry about usb-mode-switch because they're bundled with Mint. Well, my modem was detected and I made a new connection, my ISP Airtel was in the list. That was fine so far. But when I connect, it either disconnects instantly or after 10-15 seconds. And the modem disappears from network manager. If I reconnect the modem it appears again in network manager but on connection it disconnects and disappears. Strange!! Though lsusb always shows the modem no matter whether it is connected or disconnected or disappeared from network manager.

The same problem persists in Ubuntu 12.04 though. I tried at least 5 tricks but still it remained unsolved. Please help, my Mint is lying uselessly, because, you know, without a working internet a PC is almost useless in 3 parts out of 4.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I guess that the reason is a lack of current, so you could try to give some extra current using branch-USB-wire, which gives some extra current from USB-port.

But the modem works fine under windows. Is it really possible to have lack of current specifically under linux?

I don't think the modem lack of current. I am recently have problem like this too ( usb modem disconnectedly ).
Try :

Code: Select all
sudo service network-manager restart

I think recently update (network-manager) fix this problem for me.

From Indonesia :?:

Kalau gitu pakai bahasa indonesia aja ya.
Telkom Flexi evdo sejak awal 2012 suka mengubah-ubah setting servernya ( saya pakai telkom flexy EVDO ) , coba ubah setingan pada network connection , pada mobile broadband ,ppp setting:
hilangkan centang pada allow deflate data compression

Nanti coba saya cek komputer satu lagi yang pakai LM13 MATE , komputer utama saya pakai linux mint 13 cinnamon

Hi,
I had the same problem with a Huawei 173 USB modem.
The dmesg shows that your device was recognised and configured properly as a modem (/dev/ttyUSB0) with usbserial driver.
Run 'usb-devices' at the terminal prompt. you should see your modem, alongwith the various modes it supports. Output from my device is below:

T: Bus=01 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=05 Cnt=01 Dev#= 5 Spd=480 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 2.00 Cls=ef(misc ) Sub=02 Prot=01 MxPS=64 #Cfgs= 1

Note that the vendor and prodID are different in your case -- make a note of them. Also note the interface number for data ('2' in my case).

now run (in terminal)
sudo usb_modeswitch -v YOURVendorID -p YourProdID -R -i YourInterfaceNUMBER -n -s 3

You should see some text being displayed and your modem being reset. Now check your Networkmanager applet icon in the panel. You should see you mobile broadband connection again. If you use Edge predominantly, edit the connection properties to disable roaming ('Any network' checkbox) and set connection type to 2g/EDGE only.

if all works good, copy the last line of code (sudo ...... -s 3) and paste it into a text file , so that next time you just have to copy-paste it!

Happy surfing!
