slow WiFi ... Mint 13 Mate & Mint 14 Mate

WiFi issues here... fresh install Mint 14 Mate on a HP DV7, dog slow. did updates with cable but still the same. Booted to Mint 13 Mate, same thing. Then I booted to LMDE and it runs nice and fast... frustrating. Had been running Pinguy 11.04 (Gnome 2 based) as my primary and it was plenty fast too.
Fresh install of Mint 11 works fine...
Any Ideas?
