No network devices available, no internet access

My laptop recently shutdown suddenly and when I turned it back on I had no sound and no network devices available. Also the "Connection Information" is greyed out when I right click on the network button on the menu.

I am using my university wireless network and I do not have a wired connection so I have to try to solve this problem from the computer lab. I will try to get permission for wired access but it is somewhat of a bureaucratic process and I don't know how long it will take. This has happened once before recently, and I reinstalled Linux Mint and everything worked fine -- for about a day and a half.

I ran mintWifi as instructed in the "Before you post..." thread. I cannot copy the results since I am on a different computer but here is what seemed to be noteworthy:

I tried to reinstall the network-manager with "sudo aptitude reinstall" and I get a message back saying "No file name for network-manager."

To reinstall it is necessary have a wired/ wireless internet connection active...

Try:

No changes. Already contains newest package.

Failed. Attempted to connect to the internet (which of course didn't work.)

It seems that my network-manager is installed, I just don't know why it's not doing anything.
