setting up mint 12 notebook as a wifi hotspot with 3g dongle

i have tried to create a hot spot using the network settings, everything points to success except that once i save the settings the computer appears to attempt to connect to itself ie the hotspot that i am trying to create wirelessly and drops the usb modem connection.. i am probably doing something wrong , please help i am new to linux and trying desperately to break away from the windows stranglehold.
