Ok, so you probably have to uninstall compat-drivers before the installed Realtek vendor driver will work: sudo make uninstall from the folder where compat-drivers was extracted.

OK, I did the sudo make uninstall command. No output appeared within the Terminal screen, but it seemed to work, as there was a pause before my cursor appeared again within the window, and I could hear the computer working.

Wireless still doesn't seem to be working, as I can't see the household network appearing as an option to connect to within the 'Wireless' screen of 'Network'.

Any ideas for verifying the uninstall worked / what else to do now?

Ok, could you re-run sudo modprobe rtl8192cu and modinfo rtl8192cu now? Then we'll see if it is using the vendor driver now. Maybe you need to do sudo make install again on the Realtek driver after having uninstalled the compat-drivers one.

OK, here is a bunch of outputs for you to read (from before, during and after reinstallling the Realtek drivers).

BEFORE INSTALLING THE DRIVERS

sudo modprobe rtl8192cu

(no output shown on screen)

sudo modprobe -rv rtl8192cu

Code: Select all

rmmod /lib/modules/3.2.0-23-generic/kernel/net/wireless/cfg80211.ko
sudo modprobe -v rtl8192cu

I just used http://www.textdiff.com/ to verify that all of the modprobe and modinfo outputs were the same before and after.

I also used http://www.textdiff.com/ to verify the differnce between the current output at the end of the chmod +x install.sh and ./install.sh installation scripts. Both were the same.

CURRENT BEHAVIOUR OF WIRELESS ADAPTOR

After a reboot, things are still not working for me. My home network ('Sirius') was not showing in the list of available wireless networks.

...then after about 10 minutes of idle PC time, I got the same 'Authentication required by wireless network' popups, which I mentioned last week.

This time I noticed when I clicked the 'network' icon in the system tray, the home network ('Sirius') was listed, with a signal strength of 94%. (This signal strength may also have been there last week, but I did not notice it).

In any case, I could not connect to the network, despite entering the correct password.

So even though the card does not seem to be automatically detecting the household network, it seems to occasionally recognise that the network is there (as indicated by the 94% signal strength thing). I wonder if it is only occasionally checking for the 'Sirius' network because I have 'added' it as a 'connection' in the 'Network connections' window.

Any thoughts on what to do now? I could email those Realtek email addresses listed in the modinfo output...

Please install rfkill

Then run:

Code: Select all

rfkill list

Does the same machine have windows on it and does that connect to your wireless?
And you are using WPA2? correct?

It correctly loads the driver right now. I guess you're out of luck with this Asus adapter. Default driver (Linux 3.5), compat-drivers (Linux 3.8 ), and Realtek vendor driver all not working properly. I don't just know of any other driver that could work. Maybe some future Mint version will have it working (you mentioned Larry Finger: he is the maintainer of this driver indeed, if he finds a fix for this then it'll certainly show up in Mint or a newer compat-drivers some day).

Yes
I was wondering if there was MAC access control on the network. But if he can confirm windows works, then that would rule that out as it uses the same hardware.

I guess you could email Larry, but I know he doesn't take kindly to that method of contact.

Indeed, you should not e-mail upstream driver maintainers for problems like this. I just meant to tell that this is a well-maintained driver (I have once submitted a patch for it myself) so if there is a fix available it'll get included sooner or later.

Hi guys, that's a shame! It seems we are at the end of the road for this device in Linux currently. I have put up a note on the Linux Mint community hardware list, with a link to this forum thread. (Let me know if I missed any important info which may help other users).

I will either eBay this ASUS N13 device, or give it to a Windows-using friend.

I am now looking at other N300 network cards to buy. (This is my local computer shop's parts list).

I read reviews of USB wireless adaptor I saw on another computer forum I visit (mostly Windows users who care about signal strength/data speed/etc). Two items available at my local shop are well-reviewed by them: D-Link DWA-140 and TP-Link TL-WN822N.

(The links above are to their listings on the community hardware database. They are rated as working in Mint 9. Is this a sign that they should work with my Mint 13 installation?)

Let me know your thoughts on this, or if there are any other N300 adaptors on the parts list from my local computer shop which are known to be good quality, and easy to install. (I am not interested in purchasing a N150 adaptor).

The TP-Link dongles with Atheros chip sometimes need a quirk when there's bad transfer speeds, but this is easy to do. The latest v3 revision of the TL-WN822N, though, has no Atheros chip but a Realtek RTL8192CU chip just like your Asus dongle. It would be nice if you could still get a v1 or v2 device.

And that Linux is supported, doesn't mean everything. Often it's just about the chip manufacturer having a Linux driver on their website. And yes, for the Realtek RTL8192CU chip you had, there is a driver online (which did not work for you).

The Tenda W311M has a Ralink RT5370 chip. This one does not yet work out-of-the-box in Mint 13, it needs Ralink's driver to be installed. In Mint 14 it may work right away.

For D-Link, they often have many different revisions of devices with different chip types. Some Mint user had one revision of the device working, but this doesn't mean that all of them work. Of the DWA-140 you mentioned, Rev. B1, B2 and C1 should work; Rev. B3 has a Ralink RT5372 chip which also needs Ralink's driver to be installed on Mint 13 just like the Tenda device. Earlier I did say
But honestly, I find it more viable to just get a device that works OOTB
Eg: Belkin F5D7050
Have you googled one in your area

That's a wifi G device, and I thought the OP wanted a 300N dongle. The TP-Link TL-WN822N (provided you can get a v1 or v2 version) is certainly worth considering since it's not too expensive and has an antenna for much better signal quality than nano dongles can provide. But if such a device is too large for you then it's certainly ok to choose a different wifi dongle, there are many other ones which can work fine too. Even without antenna it's already a fairly large dongle.

For that device too, there are multiple revisions. The latest one requires Ralink RT5370 driver to be installed; but since you have already installed some drivers I'm sure you will manage to do that. From what I've heard, the driver is usually working right.

Those Ralink drivers are found on http://www.mediatek.com/_en/07_download ... php?sn=501 and installation should be done with make and sudo make install. If you don't know what device you have exactly you can run lsusb or look up the type and revision of your dongle on www.wikidevi.com to find out the chip type.

Thanks for your support guys.

I will make a small $25 donation to the Linux Mint cause, as my appreciation for your help.

It sure needs some care. I have a Tenda USB device
https://www.modmypi.com/tenda-wireless- ... rk-adapter

It has a Ralink chip and uses: rt2800usb

Works OOTB

My eeepc uses the same driver but pci rt2800pci on it's built in wireless

This https://www.thinkpenguin.com/
supplies stuff at a price
