Mint 14 Cinnamon - Wireless drops unless ping runs constanly

Post by bluehandcc »

I'm new to Linux and even newer to Mint so go easy... and real slow.

Just bought a TP-LINK TL-WN821N v4. From what I found here ( http://wikidevi.com/wiki/TP-LINK_TL-WN821N_v4 ) the wireless chipset is a Realtek RTL8192CU which should be natively supported. I plugged in the adapter and was able to connect without additional drivers needed. I thought I was in business until a few minutes in the connection dropped. Then it started asking me for my wifi password, which I entered, but it never reconnects. It just keeps asking for the wifi password.

I tried to toggle the connection off and then on as others have had luck with that but that doesn't give me any results. No SSIDs are listed in the little wireless menu on the panel after I do that.

If I unplug the adapter and plug it back in it will reconnect almost immediately but eventually drops again. I did find that by running ping I was able to extend the connection time out to 20+ minutes but it just dropped again while writing this even with a ping running in the background so I'm out of ideas. Also, the green power light on the USB adapter is still lit.

Quick update...

It seems that running a constant ping has nothing to do with it staying connected longer or not.

Well after much trial and error I gave up and moved to a different card.

I picked up a Tenda W522U.

inxi -N shows the following:

Ralink RT3572 Wireless Adapter driver: rt2800usb

The only issue I have with it is that even though it's connected to an N-speed network it's only showing 43mbit connection and the wireless router is only 10ft away with nothing in between it. Oh well, that's for another thread I guess.

Hi,

in response to your original post, I also had the same problem, so I followed the instructions here....

http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/wlan- ... st-5210562

although I've just finished, my wireless status is showing 100% and it was never that high before... it looks like its going to be a stable connection...

hope it helps..

cheers
