wifi not working

Post by jovankostenov »

Hi everyone,
I am new to linux. So I started by trying linux mint, but my
wifi doesn't work. I am able to connect on the wired but when I try to turn
the wireless, it immediately turns off.

here is information about my laptop:

This shows your wireless interface is sure down. (IF: wlan0 state: down) See if the driver is there in your driver database from the terminal.

Code: Select all

find /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/* -type f -name rtl8723ae.ko
Then can you check and see if that driver is loaded?

Code: Select all

It sure looks like that driver is loaded and it should be working. Try this next...

Code: Select all

Hi, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Something's really off here. I half expected the last command would show your Wifi device is blocked but it's not even showing up there. Let's try some basic stuff. Can you look in Control Center -> Users and Groups, make sure your account type is admin first. Then go Advanced Settings -> Users Privileges (it's a tab). Make sure everything is enabled in there. Especially the "Connect to Wireless...." thing.

Then do this from the Terminal Window

Code: Select all

sudo iwconfig
I'm thinking maybe the device will show it's is in managed mode. I might need a little help on this one, maybe somebody else will jump in on this.

Re: wifi not working

My mistake, Linux Mint Petra looks different in Users and Groups from LMDE, which is what I have.

We may have to ask for some help on this. I'm not sure yet why your wifi is not working.

But first, that little blue colored thing that looks like a shield, with the exclamation point (in your taskbar, at the lower right) shows that you have some updates available. Just click on that thing, it will lead you through it. Did you do any updates since the initial install?

yes, I updated mint since the first time I used it. And I also just updated him right now, so, no problem with that.

I'm searching for an answer. Can you try this? It looks like it's for LM 16 and it's pretty basic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOuIIsg9FgE

Driver manager will probably show the Realtek in your case though.

There's nothing else in there I expected to see for wifi drivers. It kinda looks like your Realtek driver is loaded from what I have seen so far. I asked someone else for help, maybe we'll get somebody involved. I'm not sure if I broke protocol now that I did that. :?

There is something else we can try in the meantime. But again it's very curious that it appears your driver is loaded. Do you have the Windows Wireless Driver Utility as part of your install? It's called "ndisgtk" in Synaptic. The GUI front end for ndiswrapper which you should have already with Petra.

Try this command from the terminal as well to confirm the driver is loaded or not.

Code: Select all

sudo lshw -C network

Re: wifi not working

Post by gtsfer »

The driver is definitely there. It may be that network-manager is not starting automatically on boot, therefore no wireless. In which case you may have to add it to startup services. For now, to check the status of network-manager...

Code: Select all

sudo service network-manager status
If it is stopped issue this...

Code: Select all

sudo service network-manager start
See if wifi now works. If it does not then check the contents of this file...

In... /var/lib/NetworkManager
edit the file "NetworkManager.state"
If anything is set to "false" change to "true". It should look more or less like this...

Code: Select all

[main]
NetworkingEnabled=true
WirelessEnabled=true
WWANEnabled=true
WimaxEnabled=true
Save if you make changes and Reboot. See if this gets any results.

I think maybe I missed something here the other day. The output from the "sudo rfkill list" that you did the other day looks like....
device 1: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes
I believe this means it's blocked in your BIOS settings or by a off/on switch on the laptop for the wifi device. Try this to unblock it...

Code: Select all

sudo rfkill unblock 1
Then Restart your networking:

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
