Quiana does not search for wifi.

Post by patman »

Hi there I installed Quiana. Love it so far but refuses to search for wifi at all. All other devices connect to my router.
Readr forums and am now overlaoded in my head.
Her's what I get when I run mintwifi in terminal:

Hi Patman!
At the moment I do not see a solution, only a hint

Code: Select all

inxi -F
is a powerful command, my output / on live MATE:

Code: Select all

mint@mint ~ $ inxi -F | grep Network
Network: Card-1: Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 [Rainbow Peak] driver: iwlwifi
Card-2: Intel 82579V Gigabit Network Connection driver: e1000e
Edit: Sorry!
But if I look at the output of

Code: Select all

 inxi -F
the lines concerning Network are showing more detail:

Code: Select all

Network: Card-1: Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 [Rainbow Peak] driver: iwlwifi
IF: wlan0 state: up mac: 88:53:2e:b6:17:7d
Card-2: Intel 82579V Gigabit Network Connection driver: e1000e
IF: eth0 state: down mac: 00:90:f5:c9:e9:e8

Thanks Seeley but how do I install 'inxl'?

Normally "inxi" is available as a command in the Terminal; but I don't know, if it is present in each distribution and each DE (what's yours?).
If you open a Terminal, copy and paste

Code: Select all

inxi -F
into it and report what happens.

It appears I have two audio devices, one on board (AMD AC'97 which I have never noticed before) and .Broadcom BCM4318 Card. Is there a possible conflict here?

Part of my output on Petra (WiFi disconnected, LAN cable connected):

Code: Select all

Network: Card-1: Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 [Rainbow Peak] driver: iwlwifi
IF: wlan0 state: down mac: 88:53:2e:b6:17:7d
Card-2: Intel 82579V Gigabit Network Connection driver: e1000e
IF: eth0 state: up speed: 100 Mbps duplex: full mac: 00:90:f5:c9:e9:e8
On your output there is no Hex number (MAC address) for WLAN!

Maybe the following,
http://www.linux-tips-and-tricks.de/en/overview/
helps; it's originally written for openSuse, but I tested it on other distributions and it worked
(mint I don't know - but I would try it).
Download it with your working eth0 connection, but before starting the programm, disconnect eth0;
questions to answer: concerning WiFi!

BTW: I only see 1 sound card, Broadcom concerns Network.

Many thanks for your help Seeley.

I went to suggested link, Downloaded the collectNWdata material from Terminal. It seemed to run something and stored it somewhere that I can't find. Run the find command and still can't find it. It all seems a bit over my head now. Never had this problem with Katya, nor XP (but I hate MS) and as much as your help is deeply appreciated; yet you seem to be the only one offering support, I am seriously considering forgetting this version. (Don't wanna do that....) Can you suggest a better one?

How do I find and fit a MAC address?

Getting lost here fast and I would rather stick it out but not sure if I am up to it as it seems way too complicated for my confused headspace...

Hi!
If you have time: some hours later I have enough time, although I've tested collectNWdata (with success) on 3 other distributions, I could try it later on on my
Mint Maya or Petra (Petra, I suppose, because I will replace Petra with Qiana KDE).
Maya works (with a few little problems concerning updates). it is LTS too, but the problem is, that there are no point releases, that means, you always have the old iso and if you install it now, it will take much more time to update the system (compared to the installation), e.g. installation 30 - 40 min, updates 1 - 2 hours and you have to answer questions during installation (you have to watch your monitor!).
Petra only is supported until July 2014 - not to recommend.
Qiana KDE RC works, but I'm waiting for the final release; Qiana MATE and Cinnamon are to slow on my computer - I have no idea why.
I never had a problem with the MAC address, I can't answer your question how to find it - maybe collectNWdata gives a hint.

Please wait for my next reply!

Before we proceed some basic questions:
1. How old is your computer?
2. OS preinstalled? If yes, you could test your WIFi there - is it okay?
3. Available Desktops (DEs): Xfce, MATE, Cinnamon, KDE [order: needing low recources -> high].
Maybe Xfce is a better choice for your hardware.
In any case, I would download Xfce RC 32 bit, burn an image and test it (if you have enough power on your PC: KDE RC).
4. A Linux user needs some knowledge of Terminal; if you are not familiar with it, please read through my help (-> see signature).

It's strange, that "inxi -F" doesn'rt show your MAC address.

Hi patman!
Done.
I've tested with success collectNWData.sh on Mint 16 KDE; please see the last post on my help.

Pay attention, there are some differences in my help (compared to the official site). Maybe hence it did not work for you.

Hi,

This might sound silly, but did you run the Driver Manager?

Broadcom is notorious for not providing open-source drivers so it rarely works out of the box and you often need to install drivers.
