unstable wifi connection on IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad R60e

Post by norry »

I got this laptop recently as a gift. I removed Windows XP and installed Linux Mint 17. I don't know if this wifi problem was there under Windows. I do get a wifi(g) conncetion with my laptop (IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad R60e), but the connection is not stable. When I download a large file or watch a videostream I get a proper bandwidth of about 2MB/s for about 60 seconds. Then the bandwidth drops significantly to about a few kB/s for again about 60 seconds. This keeps repeating over and over again. Of course I would like to have a decent bandwidth of about 2MB/s all the time. This problem is restricted to this laptop only. Another laptop and an ipad are doing fine on this wifi-router regarding the bandwidth. So I cannot blame the router (Netgear). With an ethernet cable between router and laptop the bandwidth is stable.

I hope it is a software problem I can fix myself. What I found out so far by searching this forum: Intel Corporation Pro/Wireless 3945ABG. I hope someone can help me further.

Open a terminal window and paste this

Code: Select all

 wget -N -t 5 -T 10 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/57264241/wireless_script && chmod +x wireless_script && ./wireless_script
and attach the wireless-info.txt or wireless-info.tar.gz file in a post

Thanks for your help. Here is my wireless-info.txt file. I couldnt attach the file to this post since txt extensions (and other extensions) are not allowed in this post (What am I doing wrong?). So I took the freedom to copy-paste the txt in this post itself. I hope this will give you some idea about my wifi problem.

First I would turn power management off with this

Code: Select all

iwconfig wlan0 power off
What country are you in since it doesn't seem to be set?

Hi,

could you also check this and post back?

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep iwl

Hi guys. Good to see an up to date thread about this issue. I spent last 2 days looking for solution. I have exactly the same Intel card on my wife's Toshiba A100 and the download speed is just tragic. The best I can do is 2MB/s (during the speed spike) out of 10MB/s. I've found a couple of threads from 2009-2011 but I wasn't able to fix this. I think I've tried all the workarounds already...Looking forward for solution.

For JeremyB: I turned power management off; but the wifi problem persists. I am from the Netherlands.

For PatH57:

To get the country code set

Code: Select all

sudo iw set reg NL
and

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /etc/default/crda
the last line of this file needs to be

Code: Select all

REGDOMAIN=NL
save, exit gedit and reboot

this is the problem, seems your wifi is configured for wpa/wpa 2 enterprise, not personal.

Hi JeremyB, it seems like you found the solution for my problem. I did exactly what you said and as a test I downloaded 3x a 500GB file without any wifi-bandwidth drop. My bandwidth stays between the 1 and 2 MB/s which is fine for me and suitable for wifi-g as I think. I hope this is a permanent solution, but I have good hope so far. Thank you very much for your help!
As I said, I did exactly what you said, but I don't understand why there was a problem at all and how I fixed it. Could you maybe give me a reference to some text I can read to understand something about the background of this problem? It makes me very curious.

For PatH57. I am using two Netgear routers. One is acting as a router (WPN824v2) and the other one is acting as an access point (WGR814v7) with disabled DHCP, IP out of DHCP range first router and so on. Enterpise and Personal are new terms for me. But after a little reading on the internet I found out that Personal is the same as Pre-Shared-Key (PSK) and Enterprise is the same as (EAP/RADIUS). Am I right? If so, on both routers I have selected --WPA2-PSK [AES]-- which implies that I have my routers configured for Personal and not for Enterprise as you mention. Please tell me if I am wrong. Unfortuanetely I have no explantion for the - is not supported by the AP - errors you refer to.

Thanks so far for all your help to both JeremyB and PatH57. I'll try to put a solved on the title which might be usefull for other people. And m_t3cH I hope this thread will help you to find your solution as well. If there are any remarks left, please feel free to post them!

Feels a little foolish, but I don't know how to edit the title of this post and add [solved] to it.

glad it worked and don't worry about the authentication errors it's just the way you have setup your internal LAN, it looks for it but drops it when it find wpa2 personal.
JeremyB is the one that got the country registration missing.

Bad news. I was to optimistic last night. Although I did a few succesfull tests, the wifi bandwidth is still unstable. The problem I described in the opening post is still there.
I have no clue what makes the bandwidth drop. Its not predictable for me.

Ok,

first thing to do is use iwscanner to check what APs are visible and witch channels are used.

open /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/ your wifi file (you need to be administrator to access it)

and paste the result here (remove your password)

Good to see you are not giving up. Let me first give you some more information before I will give you the results you asked for.

On Friday August the 1st I told you I have two routers/AP in my home. One is acting as a router (WPN824v2) in my living room and the other one is acting as an access point (WGR614v7) in my bedroom. They are connected by an UTP cable. The last one is actually a router, but some functions as DHCP and NAT are disabled, to make it function as an access point. At this moment it seems I have only wifi-bandwidth troubles on the acces point in the bedroom. I took a good look at the settings of both devices, but I cannot find a reason for the difference in wifi perfomance on this linux-mint-laptop. By the way, other devices (another laptop and an iPad) do not show wifi-bandwidth problems in the bedroom. This might be relevant to find the solution, but I don't know how at the moment.

Then the results you asked for. I copy the files of both devices below. It doesn't show a list of the AP's in my house. So you won't be able to see if there is a channel conflict with my neighbours. I don't know how to fix this.

Regarding the living room router.

Both files are exactly the same. This is not what I expected, but I dont think I made an error. Is this okay? Seems like I dont know what I am doing exactly :-).
Hope this will help us further.
