Is my wireless card broken

Post by bzzzzz »

I've got a dell d505 with linux mint installed. It's been working fine for quite sometime and I use the wireless network at home and at work without any problems. Until today that is.

Suddenly despite seeing my wireless network I cannot connect. On the same laptop on different partitions I also have a ubuntu and an xp installation - I cannot connect to my wireless network on either of these.

I have another laptop which connects to my wireless network no problems.

I'm almost certain that the wireless card in the dell is broken, but is there any diagnostic program I can run which will confirm this? Is it fixable or should I just go out and buy a new one?

Thanks

Errors on trying to connect wirelessly are logged in your syslog, located at /var/log/syslog. Perusing that might throw some light on to what precisely is causing the device to give up, although it's not a hardware diagnostic persay. Might be a place to start?

As a general rule, if networking doesn't work in three different OS, suspect the hardware. Given the symptoms you describe, I would think that your wireless transmitter is gone. Your receiver works, that's why you can see your network, but with a dead transmitter you will never connect.

Laptop repairs can be difficult. They are normally difficult to get into and very densely packed if you do get in. I would not recommend that anyone other than an trained technician attempt to do more than replace a hard drive or a ram stick.

Are you sure the wifi is enabled in the BIOS and switched on at the switch or Fn toggle?

FWIW replacment mini-pci card for this model on ebay at $11.99 and they are relatively easy to fit on most Dell models.

I'm not really sure what this tells me. On trying the different Operating systems I did shut down my laptop and restart on several occasions. I am not going to post this as solved as it may be something which is going to be temperamental. I have bought a new wireless card off ebay and we'll see if that makes any difference.

Thanks for help so far
