Solved: Wireless Stopped Working, I can't re-enable it

Postby jakevdp on Tue Apr 27, 2010 12:22 pm

Hello,
I've had Mint 8 up and running on my Dell laptop for a couple months, and had wireless working fine (albeit with proprietary drivers). Today the wireless shut off in the middle of a session, and I can't get it to go back on. I've rebooted, I've turned it off and on with ifconfig... nothing. The "Enable Wireless" checkbox on the network manager is greyed out.
This may be similar to the thread at http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=43820 but there it seems that wireless would come back on after reboot.
Here's the result of running MintWifi:

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

After searching online, I've determined that this recurring problem is a kill-switch issue. On my platform, Fn-F2 toggles the kill switch for the wireless card. Note that this is a hardware switch, not a software switch, so no software can change it.
Be sure to double check this on your platform before worrying about non-functioning drivers!
