Wireless Help on Dell Inspiron 1521 (SOLVED)

Post by Ginga1911 »

Hello all. I have just decided to finally make the move to linux. I'm a complete noob and so i decided it might be safe to try it in virtual box.
I've been searching through the forums, online and the wiki and I still cant get my wireless to work.
I am using Mint 8, but i am running it in sun virtual box.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1521 with a Dell Wireless dual band WLAN mini-card. when i run lspci i get this

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 440FX - 82441FX PMC [Natoma] (rev 02)
00:01.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82371SB PIIX3 ISA [Natoma/Triton II]
00:01.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 IDE (rev 01)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: InnoTek Systemberatung GmbH VirtualBox Graphics Adapter
00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] 79c970 [PCnet32 LANCE] (rev 40)
00:04.0 System peripheral: InnoTek Systemberatung GmbH VirtualBox Guest Service
00:05.0 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801AA AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)
00:06.0 USB Controller: Apple Computer Inc. KeyLargo/Intrepid USB
00:07.0 Bridge: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ACPI (rev 08)
00:0b.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller

I think if im understanding eveything right all i need is the driver, but i don't know where to look or how to install it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and I am sorry if this has been covered somewhere else and i missed it.

Thanks,
Ginga

Your lspci output does not show a wireless card of any type.

Please run lsusb and post the output here so we can check for the wireless card on the usb bus.

What model card is it? Was it plugged in when you ran lspci?

Found this tutorial for your particular card.

Okay so I have the driver and i installed it, but when i run ndiswrapper -l i get this
bcmwl6 : driver installed

The tutorial said it should also list my card as present, but it doesn't.
If i run lspci and lsusb I still get the same results as above.
Would there be any extra steps involved because I'm running it in virtual box?

If the wireless card is not listed in lspci or lsusb, your Mint installation apparently cannot connect to it from the virtual environment. For some reason , the virtual box is apparently blocking the wireless signal.

I am just guessing here since I have never run Mint or any OS in a virtual box, but ,since the system is running Windows(I presume) shouldn't the wireless card, which is part of the real computer and not the virtual machine be using the Windows driver?

Wit htat demonstration of my lack of knowledge, I must leave you to await more competent assistance.
