Wireless Not Working

Post by Chillwill »

Installed Linux Mint about a week ago so I'm a Newbie. The ethernet works fine but I can't get wireless to work. It shows the available networks but when I try to connect it takes a about two minutes then says wireless disconnected. In my Hardware Drivers application is says that my Broadcom STA Wireless Driver is active and currently in use. Why am I not able to connect? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You!
Will

I use the same driver and shared your frustrations getting it going. Try to go to a terminal and type

Code: Select all

sudo rfkill list
If you see either soft or hard blocked "YES" then you need to

Code: Select all

sudo rfkill unblock all
Strangely, though, you may have to do this a couple/few times to get both to say no. I have no idea why, but it works. Also, when you come out of suspend you will need to wait sometimes a full minute before you can see networks and connect. Strange, but a minor nuisance. Mint 9 did not do that...connected almost immediately.

Post back if you need more help.

I have a problem where my network icons are shaded and can't connect and I have tried everything over the forums on the Internet but no solution. I have resorted to deleting all distros and installing Mint Julia. Still have the problem.

Some information below has been edited due to previous post was during ethernet connection

I tried TBABill's fix. At first, all but one were blocked. Now I am down to 2 that will not unblock:

Code: Select all

0: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: yes
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: yes

'ndiswrapper -l' produced nothing, and I don't believe I have mint4win.

I believe that installing and trying out multiple distros may have had an affect.

Let me know if you need anymore details or any history. My problem is exactly the same as champ2087 at http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=109&t=52663. However, I was unable to find anything in my BIOS to help my cause. I posted under here as it seems more pertinent and that one was closed and under KDE category.

Thank You.

EDIT
Edited out unnecessary blather not pertinent to the fix.

Got It! Mint Wiki Wiki. All systems are a go.

It was a combination of fixes I had to do that I followed from these forums.

First I followed Txnca's post here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 04#p338875.

Then I followed TBABill's fix above.

Then WaLa I got WiFi.

And I got 5 days of schooling on the WiFi industry.

Well I tried your solution TBABill but by default soft and hard already said no. I also tried Txnca's post but again all three values were labeled true. I don't know if it is a problem with my drivers or what. Maybe I need to do something with the Windows Wireless Drivers?? Although glad Obwknobi got it working.

Thanks

Re: Wireless Not Working

Chillwill, how long did you wait to try my fix after your machine was up and running? I did notice during my attempts that if I restarted and did the rfkill list, both would say no. But as I tinkered around and then did it again (maybe 5-10 min) then it would return both with a YES. I had no idea why at the time, just noted that it happened. So I went through the whole routine over and over and finally it released. It took 3-4 attempts with the exact same command....seems silly to have to do in Linux as it has never happened before that the machine did not respond the first time. However, even when I come back from suspend my machines take almost a full minute to even see networks again, which does not happen in Mint 9. I just open the lid, wait a full minute, then start using it again. Have you delayed like that and tried again with the rfkill commands?

No but I'll try every ten minutes from now on. Let you know how it goes.

Nope, been trying it every 10 minutes and it stills says no for both. I think it's something different.

Re: Wireless Not Working

Chillwill, did you remember to change managed=false to managed=true in /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf as described in the first step of Txnca's post. I noticed you said all variables were true referring to the NetworkManager.state file, but you didn't say anything about the first file. I looked over that part somehow too on my first couple go-arounds. And maybe make sure you do all the fixes in the order i stated above.

Yep, did that part too. Did them all in the same order but both the soft and hard both say no and the three values are labeled true in Txnca's post.

You might want to check your router key. I had the same issues you describe before I ran into the issues that brought me here.

On mys Linksys system, I changed the WPA 2 password key on the gateway computer, and every now and again it trips for some reason and I have to go in and force my router to find my laptop.

I am not an expert on how to do that, but our gateway computer is window$ based with Linksys with Network Magic.

I have to go to the gateway computer, click on Network Magic, click the 'Change Wireless Protection', then just keep hitting 'Next' until Network Magic or my router begins looking for my laptop.

You also may want to make sure your WPA 2 password key (if you are using WPA 2) matches the one on your gateway computer.
