Wireless doesn't work on Linux Mint 10

Post by ouaboa »

Hi Everyone,

I recently installed Linux Mint 10 on my laptop. Windows XP was the previous OS on my computer. My laptop is an Acer Aspire 1410. Everything works fine except my wireless connection... Can somebody help me by giving me step by step instructions to install the drivers for my LAN card and the setup for my connection?
I made a copy of the drivers on my desktop from the XP boot CD. For Linux I have the following files:
LAN4401 folder: bcm4400-3.0.7.tar.gz, bcm4400-3.0.7-1.src.rpm
LAN5780 folder: bcm5700-6.2.17.tar.gz, bcm5700-6.2.17-1.src.rpm
I tried the installation steps given in the readme file....but it doesn't work...maybe I don't do it right?

Below are some infos obtain with a Terminal:

Ok, I think the problem is the Broadcom is your wired internet and your InProComm is the wireless. You need a windows driver for it and to use ndiswrapper. Here's a link to a solution from the Ubuntu forums, which will work here as well. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=133492

ouaboa,

I'm brand new to Mint, but just thought I'd mention that 802.11N for Intel wireless adapters is currently disabled in Ubuntu 10.10 (and thus Mint10?) due to firmware issues. Intel is supposedly working on a fix. The problem is that N capability was causing slowdowns (1Mbs) on the whole adapter whether you were using N or not, so they disabled it as a temporary workaround.

I am currently still running Ubuntu 10.04 (Mint9?) on my laptop due to this issue. Just thought I'd mention it in case you happen to be going crazy trying to use 802.11N.

InProComm is not Intel. It's a Taiwan company's chipset for wireless LAN connectivity. It's actually Inprocomm, Inc.

Hi,
I followed the instructions posted on this tread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1042480). The installation of ndiswrapper (already in my kernel) and the driver went well, but I'm not able to see my wireless connection even after configuration. Any suggestions...

Have you rebooted your computer yet? That is the first thing that came to mind.

If you have:

Code: Select all

InProComm IPN 2220 chipset [17fe:2220]
I looked at a few things in the posts above, as well as followed a link to http://wiki.debian.org/NdisWrapper . I am just including this link due to there being some terminal commands which may or may not help.

As a last resort, you may consider something more Linux-friendly such as:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product

I do wish you good luck.
Current hardware: a Dell OptiPlex 3010 desktop, a Dell Inspiron 531 desktop, and a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.
Current OS: LMDE 3
