Can't get wireless to work

Post by matea »

I installed Linux Mint 10 (32-bit, main) from the Live-DVD yesterday. I used Linux Mint 9 (main) before and had the same problem with the wireless. I tried different things that were suggested, but nothing worked. Then I just used LAN all the time, but that's not convenient. When I tested the Live-DVD yesterday, my WLAN worked fine. Same after the install yesterday, everything worked fine (after different updates and installs) and I was really happy about it. When I started the notebook today, the WLAN wasn't working anymore. When I unplug the ethernet the network shows up in the network manager and I can try to connect to it. If I do that it is busy for some time and then it wants to have the password for the connection. When I type that in it says in the network manager its connected, but it's really not. After a few seconds it disconnects itself.

I'm a newbie, so please keep it simple!

I ran some of the commands suggested in other threads in the terminal:

~ $ sudo /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintWifi/mintWifi.py

Re: Can't get wireless to work

Post by richyrich »

Can you dis-connect your wired link, and run this terminal command to start-up your wireless :

Code: Select all

sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
Then I'm going to ask you to perform the next two commands (again, sorry!) . You should only need that one word in the command.

Code: Select all

mintwifi
and to see which drivers are in use :

Code: Select all

sudo lshw -C network
leave the terminal open. . . if not connected to the internet, then re-connect your wired connection, and copy/paste the complete output back here again.

Your wireless is not receiving anything from your Wireless Router or Access Point ? ? What kind is it ? Have you checked the wireless settings in the Router ?
And a second question, Have you run the Additional/Hardware Drivers application in the Control Center ? Did it recommend anything ? Did you install anything from there ?

Re: Can't get wireless to work

It is a FRITZ!Box 7140, I don't know how to get more specific information? I didn't check the wireless settings, but it was working yesterday and there wasn't changed anything. When I had the same problem with Linux Mint 9 I tried to connect with different networks (and other routers), but the problem was always the same.

Yes, I did run the Hardware drivers application yesterday. It recommended the Broadcom B43 wireless driver and the Broadcom-STA-WLAN-driver. I installed the first one yesterday and the WLAN worked. When it didn't work today I had a look and the driver was still active. I installed and activated the second one to try it out, but it still didn't work.

Waitaminute . . I missed this on the last line
firmware=N/A
Have your wired connection to the internet.
Do this from the terminal, then reboot

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter
You will be asked to automatically fetch and install the firmware into the right location.

good luck . .

BCM4312 (linux-kernel 2.6.32 is needed, 2.6.33 or latter is recommended)

Sorry, it's in German. But it says I already have the latest version of b43-fwcutter, so it did nothing.

Now to try and get the b43 drivers to recognize that firmware (it is in /lib/firmware/b43 isn't it?)

Code: Select all

modprobe -r b43 ; modprobe b43
then

Code: Select all

sudo lshw -C network
to see if it has been loaded . . it was on the last line the last time . . .

Re: Can't get wireless to work

Mmh, okay, /lib/firmware/b43 exists, but I don't know what's the stuff in it.

The first command failed:

~ $ modprobe -r b43 ; modprobe b43
FATAL: Error removing b43 (/lib/modules/2.6.35-22-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/b43/b43.ko): Operation not permitted

No idea about that.

Re: Can't get wireless to work

might need to turn off the wireless

Code: Select all

and then if

Code: Select all

modprobe -r b43 ; modprobe b43
doesn't work a second time, try it with

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe -r b43 ; modprobe b43

And I had another look at the network manager and now half of it is missing. The wireless network isn't shown at all anymore.

The first error came when removing, which was the first half of the modprobe commands I gave you, and the second time it was a insert error!

Might as well sudo the second half too . .

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe b43

Okay, now I have my network manager back. It shows again the wireless network and I tried to connect to it. It was busy, wanted authentification and then disconnected again.

Does the lshw command that you used earlier show that the firmware is recognized ?

Can you reboot that router the next time you switch from wired to wireless ? reboot it right after you unplug the ethernet cable.

No, I still get

*-network
description: Wireless interface
physical id: 4
logical name: wlan0
serial: 00:22:5f:6e:af:28
capabilities: ethernet physical wireless
configuration: broadcast=yes driver=b43 driverversion=2.6.35-22-generic firmware=N/A link=no multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11bg

Did you mean that?

I rebooted the router, but it didn't help.

No bother, if it isn't recognizing the firmware it isn't going to work.

The only thing not tried is the Windows Wireless Drivers application (ndiswrapper) . . . do you have the Windows drivers on disk ? ?
