share wired network through wireless card

Postby nimraraga on Sun Feb 26, 2012 5:54 pm

Hi everyone,

I have a pc with the following nics:

04:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)
06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5906M Fast Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02)

I want to share my internet (getting it from wired LAN), with an android device (an Adhoc hotspot does not work, android does not support it as far as I know)

I have tried to try different options with network manager, but the hotspot keeps disconnecting.

Any ideas how I can do this ??

This could be of use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754961

Looks like you need root

A netgear router is about 30 dollars on ebay, totally worth it.

That's odd... lately this question have become quite Frequently Asked one... :)

Couldn't find a good HOWTO in english though. The best one I've found is for Gentoo, you can read it if you're ready to filter out the distro-specific parts: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Wireless/Access_point

You can also find some info in the threads like this one, this one, or this one.

Long story short: you'll need hostapd, dnsmasq, iptables, and some patience to set up their configuration files. Oh, and make sure your wi-fi card and its driver support "master mode".
