All images and icons red x

My wallpaper and icons are no longer visible the icons are red x'ed out and i can no longer view pictures either. I am getting the error does not recognize filetype for all picture type files. I am using gnome because cinnamon wont work since i installed the experimental nvidia driver, as i have no menu bar. Any help for either of these issues would be appreciated.

Just an uneducated guess. No .jpgs? No .pngs? Sounds like they were working before the experimental Nvidia driver? I'm running KDE. If I go to system settings, file associations, I see every file type my system knows how to deal with. There are about 50 entries in the image category. I'd check that sort of thing first.
