[edit] Unable to login to standard/desktop user account

Postby mintamico on Sun Mar 04, 2012 4:50 pm

I have installed two different users on Mint Julia, one as "administrator" and one as desktop "user" with restricted rights (like on former Windows XP). Normally I work with my "user" account - using the "administrator" only for updates.

Currently I cannot login as standard user. After submitting the password the screen gets dark for a few seconds and then the login screen reappears again. But I can still login as administrator.

What had happened?

* I accidentally erased all data in folder /home
* I restored the data from a backup [edit] i.e. I saved back the /home folder to the original partition
* there are two folders now in /home, "administrator" and "user" (as it used to be before I deleted everything)

[Edit] I can login as "administrator" and access the /home folder of "user", but I cannot use the data easily because of user rights and permissions
I cannot even copy files in the "user" home folder without doing a terminal with sudo which is quite awkward [/edit]

Therefore I would need help in 1) either repairing the password login for "user"
or 2) in migrating all my "user" data and settings to a new account so that I can have full access to my Thunderbird, Firefox etc. and different programm settings.

How did you restore the home folder? By copying back the files and folders with Nautilus or by using the command "cp"? Could it be that if you did with Nautilus you simply did not copied the hidden files (starting with a dot)? In this case try again but before you do press ctr+H or better use the "cp" command...
