Device icons for desktop

The other thing you could do is to make your own folder, which are just shortcuts to your drives. Label them whatever you want, and change the icons to whatever you want. So might make a folder in Home/username/mydesktopfolder and just put 1 shortcut to drive 1, 1 to drive 2, and one for the whole drive ("/" - labeled "My Computer"). Then make a folderview and point to that.

As far as the expanding folder contents go - you can see in the picture I posted above - it works out of the box, so it should work for you.

Or Google "KDE4 with KDE3 desktop" or something. The question might be better answered over at the KDE forums than here if these prove unsatisfactory.

Hey look at him! I'll never live that way.
But that's okay -
They're just afraid to change.

I'm not quite sure if this is applicable, but Fred posted a guide about auto mounting partitions. I did this, mounting my partitions in /media and the icons show on the desktop. I'm am guessing that an external HD would work the same, at least if it is always plugged in.

Of course I am using the Gnome version, so YMMV.
