Can't see my WinXP laptop shares from Mint KDE13[SOLVED]

Hi all.

Until a few weeks ago I was running Mint 12 Cinnamon on my main desktop PC but kept getting wierd lock-ups and problems like themes dropping out, so I clean installed Mint KDE 13 and just copied what files I needed from my old mint home directory. Everything is going really well and I'm loving KDE, but, where in cinnamon I used to be able to browse to my laptops shared folders on the network, I can't even see an option or item to click in the file browsers for the network. All I see are local files, no network at all. My Internet is running fine so I'm connected to the router and have an ip address. It was all just there in Cinnamon and I didn't need to do anything but browse to it.

Can anyone please push me in the right direction for answers for this? I'm missing my ability to share files across the network and I'm running out of time before I find I have to back track and re-install cinnamon.

Thankls in advance for any assistance.

I do not use KDE but I do have dolphin installed on an Ubuntu 11.10 VM ( don't ask  ).

There should be a "Network" icon on the left side panel of dolphin. If not can you get the list by entering this in a terminal:

Code: Select all

dolphin smb://
It should bring up dolphin to "Workgroup" and then to the shares on your network.

Thanks altair4, that did the trick and I can at least see my network shares now, but I'm still a little bemused as to why I have to type that command into a terminal when in Cinnamon it was already there when I opened the file browser. I guess I have some learning to do because it seems to me that there must be a way to set it up like it was in Cinnamon.

Thanks again though. 8)

Well it just goes to show, I'm destined to remain forever a noob. I went back and had a look at dolphins options and found that under view/panels I had 'folders' selected, when I swapped this for 'Places' my network icon re-appeared in the list to the left. What a silly oversight on my part and I don't even remember doing it.

Oh well, all sorted now and I think I have just enough time before I go to bed to break something else. 8)

EDIT: Never mind it looks like you solved it yourself :)
