How to Get rid of KDE enviroment

Postby Incentive I.C on Mon Dec 24, 2012 5:27 pm

Good day everybody! I tired to install the KDE enviroment on my computer but it failed and now i have these KDE files all over my computer. Does anybody know what terminal command i need to input to get rid of these files. Also does anybody know how i can actually install the KDE enviroment because every time i have tired it has failed.....
My godness the problem somes to be much bigger then i thought. It seems to put and install has put KDE files and applications into my cinnamon session I think i might have messed up the whole system! I now have a new terminal called Knosole as root and Nepomuk Backup and Neopmuk File indexing controller and i have a new cotogory on the mint menu called . hidden

But the problems does not stop there when i was installing Flashplayer from sypethitic it was talking about removing some of the KDE stuff.
This is the first time that i have had such a problem in Mint and it happened after updating and trying to install KDE. Also my mint menu seems to have gotten wider and my MDM theme was deleted after the update..... I guess for now on i have to play the windows game and go thorugh 200 plus updates to stop anything that looks supsesions.

Please help!!

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

You can install KDE and the common KDE applications by installing the package kde-full. You would then on the login screen select to run KDE (see the controls at the bottom to change the session to run).

Without knowing what packages you installed, it's hard to recommend what packages to remove. On Cinnamon / MATE / Xfce (whichever edition you are using) you will by default also have KDE libraries installed (well, at least Qt) as various programs need those, like VLC.

Easiest way is to open a terminal and run the following command. It will show all the packages you installed.
Code: Select all
grep " install " /var/log/dpkg.log

Then check the timestamp at the beginning of the line and match that up with when your tried installing KDE. You can probably deduce from that exactly which packages were installed at the time you attempted to install KDE. If you want, you can then remove these packages. If you need help with that, please copy the relevant part of the output here. You can copy text from the terminal, see its Edit menu.

You are running Linux Mint 13, I saw from your other topic, but with which desktop environment did you originally install it? With that we can probably check which of these packages you should remove. Because the output you share is confusing; there are obviously a lot of kde package in there (anything with the words kde, nepomuk, phonon, kate or plasma for starters) but also packages not directly related to KDE. The last three lines are from another action, so you can ignore those.

I guess you installed KDE with the package mint-meta-kde? You should then be able to run KDE by choosing to do so at the login screen.

Sorry about it being confusing but it was all I got. Anyway I am running cinnamon 1.6. I have tried lots of terminal commands to get kde.but all of them have failed hinting why I have all these junk on my computer. Also when I went to recovery mode to clean some of that junk I got errors were encounter while processing mint-configuration- kde. Kde sure is causing so mayhem. Sorry for the slow response as the wifi on my computer has also stopped working and I have to use this tiny little smartphone to respond

Hello Vincent. So hopefully doing that will fix the error as described on the previous post. But I am trying to see how I can get that command on my computer because once again wifi is down on it...
The best way to learn from it is break it OS's (is there a plural for OS?) included.

Ah, yes you don't want to type this command :) Perhaps connect the computer with a wire to the Internet for now?

Hello Vincent i am back with an update! Thank you for the Terminal command I am sure it would have worked but i decided to go on a torrent Linux mint 14 KDE on that little phone and after about 2 days it finally finished! I installed it and everything went great. At first i did not like KDE but after a week of using it and discovering some of the futures it has it is now my desktop environment. Also I have been taking a look at LMDE and it seems it does have KDE but it is not supported by Linux mint. Does it still get updates to the environment and will LMDE official support KDE any time soon.

Well i went on and installed cinnamon on my computer and i can get into the session and all but it does not look like the one from the cinnamon ISO. It looks like some weird default version. I have basically got it back to the cinnamon i remember but the icons are not right. Know anyway to get it back to Mints default of cinnamon.

I also noticed that Nautilus was installed on my computer. Does cinnamon just use nemo now? Maybe it came with Unity which for some reason was installed..... Its not as bad as people say but it is not my cup of coffee ether. I am guessing i can get rid of it from Package manger but will the other crap that came with Unity be uninstalled to.

Also with cinnamon some of its stuff is with my KDE stuff.(Dolphin is on cinnamon, KDE has 2 Firewalls) Do you know any way to split up the application to its right Desktop environment I have read you can do it and shall do a little research of it but any advise would be great

First and foremost, there is nothing wrong with using Dolphin on Cinnamon or Firewall Configuration on KDE. Though those aren't native applications to the desktop environments you are using, you can and do use applications from the one on the other already (for example VLC on Cinnamon is a KDE application). No harm done. It can get a bit crowded in the menu when you have multiple file browser; so edit your menu. On Cinnamon at least that is easy, right-click the menu button and choose to edit the menu. You can then hide (untick the checkbox) for applications you don't want to show.

When adding desktop environments, yes it can be a bit of work to get them to look as when you would install the respective Linux Mint edition. You could install them side-by-side, or you can run one in VirtualBox inside the other (which is what I do). The latter option also makes it easy to check if you missed any packages, or to copy over any default preference files. For Cinnamon, make sure you also have cinnamon-themes and mint-artwork-cinnamon installed?

For now, there is no official LMDE KDE edition and it is currently also not in the cards. Clem confirmed that again recently, when also carrying the news that the LMDE Xfce edition would be discontinued. For some background, see the last bullet on the "News and summary" section here: http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2237. There is of course the unofficial LMDE KDE edition by Schoelje: viewtopic.php?f=61&t=121058. And you can install KDE as you can any other desktop environment on LMDE.

For more questions about LMDE, lets move to the LMDE Support section of the forum  (viewforum.php?f=141)

Its just the main problem i have is sometimes nemo comes up and somethimes Dolphine comes up and sometimes Nautilus joins the party! Is there a way to get Nemo only in Cinnamon?

My Laptop can do that but a the expense of sounding like a law mower(CPU is not the best and it heats with CPU eating applications) and Cinnamon is terrible in a virtual box(for me) KDE is better but not a stable enviroment(More of a test enviroment....) And cinnamon does have cinnamon-themes and mint-artwork-cinnamon installed but Mint-info-cinnamon and mint-meta-cinnamon-dvd is not installed. There is a topic very similar to this but it is XFCE i wish I bookmarked it cause it can not find it.

On Linux Mint 14 you only need to keep the following two nautilus packages, all other packages with "nautilus" in their name can be removed and this will effectively remove the nautilus application.
- libnautilus-extension1a
- nautilus-data

Why you need to keep these two, is answered here: viewtopic.php?f=208&t=121564#p668045

Okay nautilus is gone a Nemo comes up all the time in Cinnamon. But it seems that my black theme from KDE is also with Cinnamon any reason for that. Also in cinnamon and the Unity that came with when i press the power button it goes to sleep. No menu asking me what i want to do I have tried dconfig but nothing is about buttons which is were i need to go to.
