Shutdown/Restart not working [Solved by reinstalling]

Hello all, I have just installed the Mint KDE version and must say I think it is great. After the install I went through and carried out the updates that were available through apt. Now this has left me unable to shutdown or restart my lappy in a normal manner. When I use the shutdown button I am left with a blank screen, from here, if I use ctrl/alt F1 or F2 to try to get to the command line nothing happens, but when I use the ctrl/alt/del combination, from the same position, it will start the shut down process, dropping out of the desktop into command. But it stops again with the following being the last line of text: init: rcd main process (7924) killed by the KILL signal. Now from here if I ctrl/alt/F1 I get the login script, where I can log in and if I ctrl/alt/del it will reboot the laptop, but if I use sudo shutdown now, it will only partially shutdown again. One error I noticed during the reboot was: kdm not responding to TERM signal (pid 4717). If I go straight into the ctrl/alt/F1 and try to shut down from there I pretty much get the same result, although I am left with: the system is going down for maintenance now. If anyone could shed some light on where it is I could start looking to try to remedy this problem it would be great. Apart from the shutdown thing everything is working peachy. TIA.

Jason

the updates that were available through apt
Please use mintUpdate!
It categorizes the updates so that dangerous updates like an update to the kernel is not shown by default
You may have gotten some update that broke your system
If you ctrl+alt+F1 and then sudo shutdown now without trying from the menu first, what happens?
Note you could add -h and try too

Hi Husse, sound advice and one I have read over and over again but managed to fail to follow. Anyways I have started from scratch again, seeing as I am in the middle of a night shift and it is fairly quite. Thanks for replying, I will be following good advice from here in. Thanks again.

Cheers
