Desktop & File properties Clock Time Issues

Post by Orbmiser »

Confused have time adjusted manually and was working

Getting really confused over this overly complicated for Time settings thing.
Digital Clock settings set for America/Los Angeles PST
Adjust Time & Date settings have to set manually which shows correct time.

Trying auto-adjust with north-ameriac.pool.ntp.org sets time off by +7 hrs.

orbmiser@Winterfell ~ $ sudo hwclock --debug
[sudo] password for orbmiser:
hwclock from util-linux 2.20.1
Using /dev interface to clock.
Last drift adjustment done at 1363125161 seconds after 1969
Last calibration done at 1363125161 seconds after 1969
Hardware clock is on UTC time
Assuming hardware clock is kept in UTC time.
Waiting for clock tick...
...got clock tick
Time read from Hardware Clock: 2013/03/12 22:04:29
Hw clock time : 2013/03/12 22:04:29 = 1363125869 seconds since 1969
Tue 12 Mar 2013 10:04:29 PM UTC -0.279853 seconds

orbmiser@Winterfell ~ $ date
Wed Mar 13 05:04:59 UTC 2013

So getting confused How Do We Set Time? And why is it so overly complicated? multiple places?

Rebooting clock changes after a minute to being ahead 7hrs to actual PST. And pulling hair at this point.
Thanks any help is appreciated. As can't believe how hard and confusing it is just to set system wide time.

KDE 4.10.1

I am having a similar problem. The time zone is set to Chicago/Central in both the DIgital Clock and Sytem Time/Date settings, but the time keeps resetting itself to five hours fast, probably Univesal Time for some reason. I can reset it manually, but it goes wrong again with a restart (or after suspending, or possibly under some circumstances that I haven't pinned down yet). I also can find no way to enable the automatic time setting, as it requires admin privileges, but does not pop up a password box to let me do this. These issues started within the last week or so, and I do not remember having them before.

Hi, guys. I recognize Orbmiser from the avitar and JoeInMN , you state you are running KDE 4.10. We are all on KDE 4.10. My clock is fine, even after the recent change to DST, I'm in the Boston area. If I can help by posting some config file or whatever, let me know. I'm just not here every day. I use the default clock in my taskbar. It works and I don't need anything else- no conky and no widgets for displaying time. To JoeInMN: Maybe this does have to do with DST.? if it only started last week?

anand: is polkit-kde-authentication-agent-1 running ?
yes..
anand: it works for me. :) (on fedora we ship a policykit rule allowing it)
oh!
it could be a Mint specific issue?

anand: yup

anand: example, http://paste.fedoraproject.org/5128/35960113 , shipped as /usr/share/polkit-1/rules.d/11-fedora-kde-policy.rules
anand: but, without that, polkit is supposed to prompt you for privledge elevation
From IRC - Chat with KDE team. Mint does not have any such policy kit configuration files. Will appreciate assistance from MInt KDE experts.

Now I have discovered that something is resetting not just the KDE time settings, but the computer's clock itself. At the machine's bootup screen, I hold F2 to get into the boot settings, and the system clock is at the wrong time. I set it correctly and hit F10 to save. KDE starts with the panel clock showing the correct time, but a few seconds later it goes back to being wrong again. I restart and do the F2 thing again, and the clock is wrong as before. Repeat.

Re: Desktop & File properties Clock Time Issues

Post by JoeInMN »

Additional manifestations of conflicting time settings:

Say the actual current time here is 20:27 CDT on March 17. TIme zones in both the panel clock and System Settings are set to America/Chicago.

Panel clock and popup calendar are off, five hours ahead; reading 01:27 on March 18.

An edited file saved at this instant will show "Modified: Yesterday 20:27" in its Properties. This is strange, because while the fie system apparently thinks the (wrong) time shown by the panel clock is the correct time, it seems to have recorded the Save action as having occurred at the actual correct time, leading it to claim the file was saved five hours ago. Same thing if I set the clock to the correct time; the Properties for a file saved now will show it being Modified five hours earlier today. However, the other file saved before the clock adjustment will still show the same Modified time and date as before, though now the elapsed time since the save will be correct.

The Stellarium astronomy program's clock shows the same wrong time as the panel clock, but seems to display the sky as it would appear at the correct time. Setting the planetarium clock back to the correct time causes the sky to shift accordingly, showing conditions five hours earlier than they should be. If I now set the panel clock to the correct time and start Stellarium again, it is the same; Stellarium's clock agrees with the panel clock, but the sky is wrong as before. The observing location and everything is set up as it should be there; time zone is the system default.

It seems as though two sources of clock information are somehow being used at the same time for different things. It's all very confusing. Really need to solve this.

Trying the fix posted here for Mint 13/14:

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 0&p=700388

Did the terminal procedure (though I just opened the terminal from the menu and did sudo dpkg-reconfigure tzdata rather than sudo su etc.), rebooted (doing the bootup clock settings again), did the terminal thing again for the heck of it. Time settings appear to be correct now; Stellarium clock and sky agree; file properties seem OK. The question now is whether this will all persist. Hoping so.

Does this tell anything? Time in dmesg seem to be fine. Only KDE is doing something wierd? I wish someone looks into this. I reckon it is a Mint specific issue but anyways logged issue in KDE tracker.

Code: Select all

anand@AnandLaptop /var/log $ dmesg | grep clock
[ 0.000000] hpet clockevent registered
[ 0.212486] Switching to clocksource hpet

My machine seems to be keeping time normally now. The hardware clock at bootup still shows UTC, but I'm pretty sure it's supposed to, and the time zone settings are applied to that for the software timekeeping (someone correct me if I'm wrong, which is not entirely unlikely). The post I linked to above seems to apply to Mint 13/14 in general and not just to KDE.

Summing up what (appears to have) worked for me:

Entered in terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure tzdata
Entered password; used the keyboard to pick the options on the ensuing text screen.

Restarted, saw things looking normal, did it again just for giggles. It has held up through a couple of restarts and suspend/resumes, so it's looking good so far.

HOWEVER... I just tried again to enable Time and Date to automatically set the clock from the internet, and it not only complained that it could not find the server, but the clock simultaneously went wrong again. !@#$, %@#! and &%#@. I redid the fix above, and will avoid attempting the automatic setting for a few days, and see what happens. I do not remember any of this ever having been a problem before.

Thanks Joel. It worked! :D I did not try earlier as I was not sure whether it will work in KDE.

Hi JoeInMN, Thanks for your solution to this problem, it worked like a charm for me. I've had this happen after I upgraded KDE 4.8 to 4.10 on Mint 13. One small hangup though. I notice that when I assign a time to an event or todo, it shows up as an hour earlier then the time I've given it. But hey, I guess this is something I can live with. This whole time resetting problem appears to be peculiar to KDE 4.10 as I've got various other OS's in virtual box and they all keep the correct time. I've also got Mint 14 KDE 4.9 on a netbook and it works just fine. Go figure.

Once again, many thanks. :D
