Atheros AR5007(ar242x) wireless working, but...

Daryna KDE

Hi,

I've got this "dreaded" wifi adapter working with WPA.

I did so by compiling...

cd madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r3835-2008080
make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe ath_pci
sudo modprobe wlan_scan_sta
sudo ifconfig ath0 up

added this to interfaces...

auto ath0
iface ath0 inet dhcp
wpa-driver wext
wpa-ssid *******
wpa-ap-scan 2
wpa-proto WPA
wpa-pairwise TKIP
wpa-group TKIP
wpa-key-mgmt WPA-PSK
wpa-psk ***********************************

I also added my network name, WPA key, etc to a wpasupplicant.conf file (however, not sure why???).

My only problem is this.......the wireless connect WON'T begin at startup.

I seem to have to repeat these to get an active internet connection...

sudo modprobe ath_pci
sudo modprobe wlan_scan_sta
sudo ifconfig ath0 up
sudo iwconfig ath0 essid ************
&
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Any ideas how to get the network "auto" started when the machine is turned on?

I have the same wireless chip in my laptop and after a LOT of searching i managed to get it working the same way as you in other distros with the same problems. In mint 5, however, try using ndiswrapper (windows drivers in the elissa menu) to install the original driver (you may have to google the original .inf file) and then add ndiswrapper to modprobe.

Also disable the ath proprietry driver from the elissa menu

This worked for me and is much easier than fiddling for hours in the terminal.

Works on WPA!

Hope this helps :D

Armie,

Thanks for your reply!

I'll try that, as long as I know you definitely have the ar5007(ar242x, rev.01..)

I, too, prefer the Ndiswrapper way. Much easier, less fiddling. I have set a few other PC's up successfully with that route, & "Wieman's WPA" guide on the Ubuntu Forums.

However, I tried that same method on MintKDE Daryna, but had no luck. My "iwlist scanning" revealed NO ath0 network present.
But, I don't think I disabled the driver you mentioned. Not sure if that would be the cause of the card not picking up my wireless network though...?

Too bad Mint5 KDE doesn't come in a "mini" size for CD...I don't have a DVD handy!!! haha

One last question.....

I'm soooo close to a solution for my first post, I can taste it!

1) I've determined that the wireless card "sees" my wireless network at startup :D , but doesn't connect :( .

2) Here's the key....I ALWAYS need to do the following in order to get a working connection...

a)

Code: Select all

 sudo iwconfig ath0 essid **********

&

b)

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

How would I automate the above 2 commands :?:

*******************************************************************************************************************************************

I'm concerned about the following "ciphers", which show WEP-40. The router is set up with WPA Personal, "TKIP". Should I be concerned about this discrepancy in Mint :?:

Also, not sure why there are "two" ath0's listed :?:

Code: Select all

iwlist scanning
lo Interface doesn't support scanning.

eth45 Interface doesn't support scanning.

wifi0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

ath0 Scan completed :

Just today i managed to get online through this adaptor using my home router, connecting with WPA.
to do this I made the requester show the password before connecting, and had to connect twice for it to work.

The strange thing is Ive read that help somewhere else here and it didnt work then, Ive only been able to connect with out WPA to our campus network.

Running LM6 Main Ed on a Sony VAIO VGN-NR32M/S
Only remaining problem now is speakers still work when headphone installed...

Trawled here and Ubuntu forums and found this link http://michael.flanagan.ie/blog/index.p ... sony-vaio/

My sound is now fixed in Mint 7 and the Atheros wifi works well, no troubles, out of the box.

Al T using a Sony Vaio VGN-NR32M/S - Mint 7 rocks...haven´t found anything I can´t do yet...
Wont be booting into Vista very often, except when my Wife needs to use MS office for Beavers....
