KDE 4 Arrgh!

Post by pcdoctor »

I've tried to have an open mind about KDE 4. I'm a KDE 3 girl and have gotten over the fact that you can't import the 3.x colors or that 4.x doesn't come with the 3.x colors. I installed KDE4 yesterday and it doesn't seem to support rss-glx. My favorite screensaver is Helios. I'm back to Elyssa in the meantime. I did see somewhere about KDE4 services for RSS-glx but I couldn't get it to work. I guess I'll have to eventually go back to 4.x.

I believe that there is a 3.5.10 version of KDE for Jaunty if you were interested in using it versus Elyssa. Not sure if that sounds like something you would be up for, then possibly "Mintifying" it.

Maybe some devs could get together and make a KDE 3 CE... never know it could happen.

Actually I quite like kde4x,
  • The customization available
  • File association selector..
  • Panel operations
--I don't like some of that, or the run dialog screen, which they improved a bit since I last looked in kde 4.2
In terminal...
  • apt search rss-glx
i rss-glx - Really Slick Screensavers GLX Port
Is it not in the Mint repository ?

None of the rss-glx screensavers is currently available in KDE 4.2.4.
When I placed symlinks to each of the .desktop files in
/usr/share/kde4/services/ScreenSavers and ran kbuildsycoca4, they all
became available in System settings > Desktop > Screen Saver > OpenGL.

The helios screensaver
--not sure what that one looks like..

It took me a while to warm up to KDE 4. KDE 4.2.4 finally convinced me that KDE 4 was headed in the right direction. I miss how easy it was to configure the panel in KDE 3.5.10. I do like the new look KDE 4 offers and 4.2.4 has been quick and error free so far. Keep your eye on KDE 4 it is getting better all the time.

I found a way to get the RSS-glx screensavers to work with kde 4
http://www.opendesktop.org/content/show ... 0fecd8103e
I tried it on the lm7 kde rc and it worked.
Maybe this bug will be fixed without having to do this.
