Kill Gnome Network Manager

One of the recent updates has brought back the Gnome Network Manager into my system tray. I'd like to know how to get it so just the KDE Network Manager shows up there. Here's a short synopsis of recent events:

I installed the plasma for the KDE network manager, then added it to the system tray. On restart, just the KDE network status icon would show up and the Gnome one would not. I would only be asked for my master password once.

A recent update has caused the Gnome Network Manager to show up in the system tray, along with the KDE one. I am now asked for my password twice. The KDE network manager icon claims to be in a "passive" state. I assume this is because the password request for the Gnome Network Manager occurs first.

How do I stop the Gnome Network Manager from running on start? I couldn't find it in the list of startup services, but I didn't spend a long time looking, either.

I tried to remove networkmanager and gnome-networkmanager, but both ended up being dependencies on mint-meta-kde, so my entire KDE wanted to disappear.

I originally installed from the Gloria KDE CE.

Thanks for any help.

Copa360 wrote:Network Manager is the "backbone" as it were that runs in both Gnome and KDE. Gnome's front-end is called "nm-applet". That's the one you will need to prevent from starting up. Unfortunately, I do not run KDE 4.x so I can't tell you exactly where to set the start-up configuration.
Thanks. I'll see if I can find and/or uninstall that.

Personally, I find (& have for some time found) that network management in KDE is an absolute dog's breakfast as the saying goes; especially wireless. I leave the gnome-manager stuff alone in Gnome because those machines here are line networked, but in KDE (or anywhere with wireless) I just install 'Wicd'. The best little network manager around IMO. I think it is at v1.59 in the repos but you can add a Jaunty PPA repo to keep it right up to date (v1.62). See the Wicd Home Page for details.

http://wicd.sourceforge.net/

When you install Wicd, it will automatically take out any conflicting gnome-manager apps and yes mint-meta-kde; BUT, it only removes the meta package, not all the stuff the meta package installed. Are you sure of your statement above or did you assume it because you saw the meta package mentioned. Generally meta packages are quite safe to remove.

Anyway, here it did not remove anything it should not have.
Cheers,
Rhodry.

Thanks, rhodry, for your interest.

The nm-applet seems to be working fine, and I never had any problems with the KDE plasmoid or network manager. My problem stems from the LOOK of the icon that nm-applet uses. It feels out of place when using the Air or Oxygen plasma themes because it's, well, gnomish. How does the Wicd system tray icon compare? Is there a way I can change the icon?

As I recall, the list of things that were going to be removed was extensive and happened to include the mint-meta-kde package, hence my apprehension. I'll try again when I boot back to Mint and see if that's the case or if I imagined it. That's certainly possible. :D
