Helena KDE unable to read UDF Volume, Gloria KDE OK

Post by mf-linux »

Hello everybody,

I tried to open and read a CD (pdf files inside) with Dolphin in Mint KDE 8, but nothing appeared in the screen. Instead, when clicking on "UDF Volume" in Dolphin screen, the following message could be read: "... no new line at the end of etc/fstab; mount: block device /dev/sr0 protected against writing; mounted as read-only; mount:wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on dev/sr0, missing codepage or helper program or other... try syslog..."

Then, I tested the CD with Mint KDE7 (I have dual boot) and it worked fine. However, there are no differences for dev/sr0 in fstab between Mint 8 KDE and Mint 7 KDE ("/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0") and I have no problem with other CD formats.

Here is what KSystemLog told me in Mint KDE 8:

Re: Helena KDE unable to read UDF Volume, Gloria KDE OK

...
Also, is it just for that one particular cd or it is the same for other cd with same format? if you open terminal, cd to the location, can you dir it? if you made an image of that cd from gloria, can you mount it in helena? (the info might help you or the other more capable mint users to help you)
Just want to share it while you waiting for our mint gurus to help you sort it out.. wish i can be more helpful.. :) hope you will get help from someone here soon..

Thank you, feed3.
I have read the post you told me: some people said it was something about fstab line, but I think this is not the case, as the fstab line is exactly the same in Helena as in Gloria, and the latter works perfectly. Someone marked the issue as fixed, but I could not find where the solution was explained (I am not very familiar with those posts).
I've failed trying to dir to the udf volume by using the terminal.
I looked also for different permission configuration for dev/sr0 between Helena and Gloria, but I found nothing.
I guess this is not a very frequent problem because of only few people use this CD/DVD format. In fact, in my case, this was a CD sent to me by a friend who uses Windows XP; otherwise, I would not be aware of this problem. What is intriguing/irritating for me is that an older version of Mint KDE manage this perfectly.
I hope someone can give some help: I would like to have only one Mint KDE version running on my laptop: the newest one!

while stumbling around the net and reading bug reports may not be a bad thing, pointing someone to a bug written nearly 4 years ago (and closed/fixed more than 3 years ago) will provide nothing more than insight into the bugfix process. ...and, how some folks who don't understand (or don't read) what they're reading might continue adding comments to an old bug!

the discussion on the bug to which feed3 referred us finally ends with a pointer to another (similar) problem that was opened only 3 years ago, and was also closed/fixed, and then subsequently commented on by folks who don't understand (or don't read) what they're reading and instead add a bunch of "me too" comments to a closed bug.

what you (generic "you", not anybody in particular) should do is search the bugtracker for the same exact issue (not a similar one), and open a new bug there if you don't find one already existing. I saw several instances of developers nearly begging folks to do that in the commentary of the two previously mentioned bugs.

for the sake of argument/clarity here... you are experiencing an issue in Mint Helena (which corresponds with Ubuntu 9.10) that didn't exist in Mint Gloria (which corresponds with Ubuntu 9.04), so you'd look for UDF mounting issues that appeared in Helena and/or 9.10 that didn't exist with the same exact media under Gloria and/or 9.04. if you don't find such an issue already reported, then report it.

you will likely find a few similar problems during the search. they may or may not pertain to you. if they're from more than a few months ago and were marked as resolved, fixed, committed, closed, etc, then they are, most likely, not the same problem you're experiencing. ...this is especially true if they were closed/fixed in a Ubuntu release prior to 9.04.
