[solved] LM13 XFCE installer crashing

When trying to install LM13 XFCE final from DVD on an old PentiumIII-866 laptop, the installer crashes as soon as it reaches the stage of “installing system”. Anybody else seeing this? Any ideas how to work around this? (Cannot boot from USB, sadly. So I’m stuck with the DVD—or will have to put the HDD into another machine, install there, and put it back afterwards.)

Every computer with a CD/DVD drive and a USB port is capable of booting from USB:

I am NOT saying this is the answer to your problem mind you but you could look into it if you wanted.

While running in Live mode, try uninstalling "ubiquity-slideshow-mint" from the software manager. See: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=102866

(I have since moved from mint 13 mate to xfce.)

Interesting. That hasn't been my experience. I've come across some "modern" boxes (with a CD/DVD drive and a USB port) that still don't allow booting from USB.
You didn't read the link.
