Please help software manager doesn't work. I thought that it was cause I didn't get internet to work, but now I got that to work and software manager still wouldn't install anything. As soon as I press install, it doesn't do anything at all... It does ask for a password though...

One thing you can try is to install whatever program you are trying to install through synaptic package manager. It is much more informative than software manager in regards to what it is downloading and whether there are any errors. You will get more of an idea as to what is going wrong.

So I'm trying to install this player XMMS, and it says it can't authenticate it, and almost everything which this packcage (I guess) includes...

Thanks for your input

It's funny, if I try to install xmms via terminal once more with the same command it shows
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
xmms2-core is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 20 not upgraded.

But the program still isn't anywhere around...

have you had a look at this website http://xmms2.org/wiki/Main_Page

have a look at the "download, install, use" links - looks like there is a bit of work involved.

That's what I initially got discouraged of, because there where things in the instructions I wouldn't know what they even meant... like cd to something...

But the problem isn't in the particular program, I tried another one, same thing...

So there's obviously something wrong, maybe I'm not privileged as administrator possibly...

I'm also trying to get some help on the irc help.

If it's in the context I think it is cd means change directory.

When in Terminal you always need to precede a command with "sudo" to give root privileges. The instructions might assume you are already logged in as root.

I tried installng XMMS and it installed OK but wouldn't launch, then I found that website. But as you say if you are having connectivity issues or admin rights issues that's another thing.

Is your account set to as an admin account?

I've already figured out that some programs install just fine from the software manager like opera (although this basic software manager freezes)... And somebody else from irc helped me to install lmms program via terminal (althuogh I still can't see it anywhere and it's files don't launch it either (I have to launch from the terminal)).

So it's not that no program wouldn't install at all

With this xmms, I guess I have to go through the install instructions, and I'll post questions if I have any.

As for admin privileges, I don't know how to check, so please tell me. Because I'm guessing that that's what's happening.

Sorry to take so long to get back to you.

If you installed software via terminal, then you have the admin password. To work with files as Root (admin), go to the folder where the files are that you want to work with, right-click on some blank space and in the menu that pops up there should be something like "Open here as Root". It will ask for your password and will then open a duplicate window with a red border. Bare in mind that any changes to files made as Root will permanently affect your system, so be careful and make backup copies of any files you wish to alter before making adjustments.

'Software Manager' has issues... :x

If use 'synaptic or 'apt-get install' make sure sources reloaded.
for xmms2 if want download complete 'meta package' 'xmms2' if want the core only need 'xmms2-icons' also to show in menu. (or make menu-launcher)
