Help with editing .desktop files

Post by neruson1981 »

Linux Mint 13 Maya Xfce 64 bit.

First off, I'm mainly a Fedora user. I have been since Fedora 7. With the exception of using Arch Linux for a couple years that's really the only Linux distro I've used (with the exception of brief trial runs), but over the years Linux has become my main OS and I want my desktop (it's basically my TV/media center) to have better proprietary driver support. Fedora, due to it's philosophy has no official support for this.

But anyway, I'm trying to manually edit the .desktop files in the xfce menu to get rid of double entries. In the Settings entry, at least in Fedora, I could just add a "NoDisplay=true" to the end of the file and have it removed from the Menu but still have it show up in the Settings Manager application. This doesn't seem to be the case in Mint because when I add this to the Accessibility entry it removes it from both the menu and the application (I'm assuming this is due to it being packaged differently under Mint/Ubuntu). So how do I get rid of the entry in the menu but keep the entry in the Settings Manager application?

Here's my example of accessibility.desktop with my changes:

Already was disscussed few question down. :?

'alacarte' menu editor does not work as expected in 'Mints' (little buggy but does work in Buntu's). **Opinion** think Mint doesn't use standard menu totally unmolested** :?:

Using 'mintconfig-xpce' control center (still in LMDE repo, but not in standard(Buntu) repos. Not sure if Debian package will work in Maya?

I get around it by (in LMDE-Xfce) my using 'mintconfig (drag & drop anything else on custom tab) and use alacarte to disable 'setting' (& system) in main menu (that part works in 'alacarte in mint!) I then use a panel lancher to mintconfig-xfce.

LMDE isn't that much differnt to a 'Main' edition (read Buntu) but xfce still 4.8 (better than using a PPA for 4.10 core with lots of stuff in repo breaking  )
But with LMDE still no (Jockey) offically for Video drivers (good howtos tho)

Maybe the Mint14-Xfce will have menu and editors (alacarte) sorted out.

P.S. I also like 'app Finder' as replacement for main menu. (Uses same menu base listings)

Oops, sorry about that. Didn't notice the other post. I work 10-12 hour night shifts. I'm not all there at times

Oh well though. I guess I can just remove the settings manager entry from my menu and just add the launcher to my panel or AWN.

I like appfinder to, but I actually use Synapse. It's more complete and I can search anything and even launch google searches from it, but I still like having a nice, traditional clean menu as well. That's the one thing that always aggravated me about Xfce: so many needless, double entries in that menu. I have a serious pet peeve about my setups on my computers. Little things like that just tend to drive me nuts.

No problem I worked 3rd shift most of 30 years (mostly 12 hours so actually nite or day shift not 3rd  )
