User settings being reset every reboot [SOLVED]

Hi everyone,

Firstly, I am a linux newbie and I am not a native english speaker, so sorry for any dumb questions or bad english.

So, here is the problem of mine:
I have installed Linux Mint 14 XFCE 32-bit on my laptop where I already had Win 7 Pro installed - I chose to install it on the same partition, no formatting. Installation went absolutely with no problems and in few minutes I booted into Linux Mint. Thought it was great, started to customize it (install apps - few of them via software manager like Wine etc. and Chrome using .deb file - and customize the interface slightly).

Then rebooted and - everything was gone - I mean, I booted into Mint with no difficulties, but all my apps and settings were gone. Tried reinstalling, again the same problem.

I have no idea what to do here. I tried to create a different user, but users were reset as well :) I don't want to format (too much time for currently low outcome), and I still think I need Windows for work, which means I am limited to installation to current partition together with Win7.

I have installed Mint using flash drive (created from image using unetbootin).

My laptop is rather old, Intel Core 2 Duo T5300 1,73 GHz, 2GB RAM, only 120GB HDD (but I have about 45GBs free), Windows 7 Professional installed.

Additional information on why I wanted Mint 14 XFCE: My reasons to try Linux and to choose Mint XFCE version were quite simple - I wanted to try a Linux distribution for quite some time and my machine is, as mentioned above, rather old and slow, so I have decided I might try some lightweight distribution to gain a little boost maybe. As a result of speaking with friends and searching the forums I came to the conclusion that Mint 14 XFCE might be most suitable for me. What I wanted to say is that I am open for hints and mainly that the solution does not strictly have to be solved within Mint 14 XFCE...

Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

Hello, zax.

You have started a Mint4win installation of Linux Mint 14 xfce. Fine.
You have successfully performed the first part of this installation. It runs inside Windows and serves only to prepare the second part of the installation.
This second part is the real Linux Mint installation. When you boot into Mint 14, what you see is a live system. The live system itself is read-only. All changes will be lost after a reboot, as you have found yourself.
On the desktop of this live system there should be a a DVD icon having the label "Install Linux Mint".
Click this icon. This will launch the second part of the installation which will give you the fully functional Linux Mint14 xfce system.

If you need help on how to perform the second part of the Linux Mint 14 installation, please, follow >> the advice given in this post <<.

Kind regards,
Karl

New user here came to post on this topic here and one other thread, I think I can recreate this issue by running this command: sudo bash -c $'echo "neofetch" >> /etc/profile.d/mymotd.sh && chmod +x /etc/profile.d/mymotd.sh' AND then rebooting my computer.

Whenever I do this, and reboot my linux mint 20.2 xfce it resets all my panel and desktop settings (pushes panel to top etc), not sure if it changing my desktop environment (currently xfwm4). I was forced to remove the .SH file that was created by the custom ssh banner login neofetch command and then restore my configs from a /home backup I made last week. This worked (and im not sure if I really need to remove the .SH file but I am afraid to leave it there after the damage it caused, and I am sure it would just re-cause the issue if I left it there and ONLY restored the xfce configs from a backup.

Anyways, this is a well known bug but could not be reproduced (at least until now as far as I can tell), not sure if its ANY sh files that go there will cause this issue, but it continues till I remove and restore xfce configs. I wish I had known what environment I was before this happened, but when I run wm-detect, I get xfwm4 (maybe if I change this and use the .sh file again it will work fine but I am a bit scared to).

if anyone is curious how to recreate this bug or wants more info from me or wants me to submit bug lmk.

this is any fairly old Topic now,
and does these issues still apply to your Linux Mint 20.2 xfce

Cannot edit my original post to quote you, but the answer is YES, I can recreate this bug in current linux mint 20.2 xfce using desktop xfwm4 (scared to try others as I am new and got really scared having to fix this)

then it would be prudent to Start an New Topic,
about what you have found, so far,
and how you can still apply this scenario to your current LinuxMint 20x XFCE desktop.
