getting sort of crash (NULL pointer dereference ) at logout

i'm regularly seeing a black screen with text when logging out of Mint13 XFCE
happens for different user accounts
weird thing is pressing CTRL+F keys gets me back to a working login, so it's not fatal.
no idea how to go about fixing this please?
also can someone recommend a log vewier so i don't have to use the command line for this, not sure how to see the lines around this one with grep!
