Yes or no to upgrading to Mint 17.1?

Post by 12 Monkeys »

Hi!

I can not decide if I should upgrade to Xfce 17.1 from Xfce 17 or not..
This is on my main box, the laptop I use for most anything.
I've read what Clem is saying about upgrading just for upgradings sake
and the old wisdom of not touching a working system.
My present install is more or less working flawlessly whatever loads
I throw at it. At the same time...
I would love to hear if anyone have any thoughts?

Regards
Mikael

You can review what Linux Mint 17.1 Xfce brings here: http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_rebecca_xfce_whatsnew.php. With upgrading in place I'm not sure if all those things get enabled on existing user account (like Compiz integration). If everything is working like you like it, perhaps there isn't much reason to upgrade for you. If downloading the ISO is an option for you, you could download the 17.1 ISO once it is released (I expect an announcement on the blog in next day or so) and try it out live (from DVD, USB thumb drive, or VirtualBox) to see if you like the refreshments--like would you use Compiz.

Thx xenopeek!
I'm atm downloading 17.1 Xfce from http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/stable/17.1/
Will run it in Virtualbox and see how it stacks up to 17.

My thought is always, when in doubt run the new version on persistent Live USB. No fear. If everything works and you like it, the "install in place" from Update Manager seems to be working well - I've just done it to my Live USB and it's fine. I did notice a slight performance hit probably because some of the new Compiz eye-candy is on by default - can be turned off easily. The update does not seem to have modified any of my OS tweaks or third party software settings. If it keeps working well on Live USB, I'll dual boot with Windows in due time.
TRUST BUT VERIFY any advice from anybody, including me. Mint/Ubuntu user since 10.04 LTS. LM20 64 bit XFCE (Dell 1520). Dual boot LM20 XFCE / Win7 (Lenovo desktop and Acer netbook). Testing LM21.1 Cinnamon and XFCE Live for new Lenovo desktop.

Thank you guys for the feedback.
I've tested the 17.1 Xfce ISO first in Vbox
and then I installed it on one of my other laptops, dual booting with Windows 7.
All plain sailing I must say. My regards to the Mint team, well done!
I am using my main box for some work related stuff, running VMware
and Vbox clones for testing. To be on the safe side I will just wait a
little while before upgrading.

I try to play safe.

Before upgrading I backup my root partition using Clonezilla (only takes 10minutes for 15gb) to an external drive. if I have problems I can restore the previous version. I learned to do this with another distribution (no names) and used it successfully on a number of occasions.

I did this 2 days ago before upgrading with no problems - Thanks Clem & others.

My set up is basically four partitions :
/ root [32Gb] :
/home - Configuration stuff (.xxxx) - downloads, desktop [32Gb]
/home/Data (distribution independent -long term programming, data storage etc) [200Gb]
/home/Pictures (distribution independent - images, video, audio etc [200Gb]

I also have another partition with my Virtual Machines (Windows 7) on

I took the leap and upgraded. Dotted my I's and crossed my T's...
Everything backed up.
And of course nothing unforeseen happened, smooth and easy all the way.
I have spent most of this evening testing and everything stacks up nicely.
Again I have to praise Clem and the rest of the Mint team!
Extensive testing pre-release pays off. Seamless upgrading
proves this. Thanks guys!
