Compiz Fusion Mint 6 Xfce RC1

Post by internetSurfer »

Hello fellow Mint XFCE users,

Decided to try a Debian based distro and have decided on using Mint.
Familiar with Slackware but plan on getting acquainted with this distro.

There is:
  • Synaptics
  • Mint Install && Update
There is an issue with getting Compiz Fusion to work. :(

If anyone could provide info on uninstalling and reinstalling a version that works
and the path/repo for this package that would be very helpful.

I saw the errors posted on this topic but found it confusing.
The box where this is installed had another distro installed and Compiz Fusion worked with no issues.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Synaptics is a GUI to apt (which is tweaked in Mint)
mintUpdate is the tool we strongly recommend for updates/grades as it helps to keep stability and avoids to some extent an upgrade "out of Mint into Ubuntu"
mintInstall is a great way to install programs - so in a sense it is a duplicate of Synaptic
I don't think you need to uninstall Compiz but you could reinstall it using Synaptic
What is your problem?
Do you use the Elyssa XFCE or the Felicia RC?

Thanks for the feedback.

Using version Elyssa used Synaptics to install updates and have used mintInstall for a few installs.

I used this tutorial as a reference and opted to modify the xfce4-session.rc file:
Xubuntu + Compiz = Pretty pretty Xubuntu

Note: You can also sudo mousepad from the terminal and open the
xfce4-session.rc file to modify the Client0_Command=compiz line.
When I find the issue will update the post.
Again thank you for the input.

Decided to roll back to Elyssa 5 and Compiz Fusion is working with no issues.
Checked the MD5 of Felicia 6 and "Elyssa" is on the left start menu button. :?:

Will install Felicia on a netbook as this install is on another box.

What is interesting is the issue with the wireless driver install on this box (Inspiron 1150).
Felicia worked with no issues but not Elyssa. :(

Used this wiki tutorial:
Felicia worked with no issues but had to delete line: modprobe -r b43legacy to get it to work.

Applied recommendation for using only mint install and have this box up and running.

Update:

I figured out the issue with Compiz Fusion working in Felicia (Linux Mint 6 RC1 XFCE).

In this tutorial: http://xubuntublog.wordpress.com/2007/1 ... y-xubuntu/

There were two options presented and I opted for the xfce-session.rc modification which didn't work.

The first option works with no issue:
The easy-but-inefficient way

Using the first way Compiz will replace your default window manager every time you login. This means that, when you log in, first xfwm4 is ran which will then be replaced by Compiz, so even though xfwm4 is started, it will then be closed again without being used.

Also note that you might want to skip to the next part “Managing window decorations” if you’re going for the easy way.

For this method, you open Applications->Settings->Autostarted applications.

There, you click Add to create an entry with the following values:

Image

Name: Compiz Fusion
Description: Desktop Effects
Command: compiz --replace

Well, actually, only the last entry really matters.

Running Compiz

Only one way to find out whether everything works as expected - run it!
In order to do so, press Alt+F2, enter compiz --replace, then click Run.
If everything works as it should, you should now see shadows around your windows!
Install on the Lenovo S10 was simple and it detected the wifi card.

Again thanks for the assistance and am now using mint update (primarily) for Mint.
Hope other users find this useful. 8)
