[SOLVED] boot takes too long

Post by SiKing »

Hello *.

I am running LM5-XFCE on an old laptop: Dell Latitude CPxJ650. The thing takes way too long to boot, like almost 10 minutes! Is there a way to find out what in the boot process is taking the most time, and then compare that with something which would tell me what is acceptable and what is not?

TIA.

if you mean this http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/dell-la ... 62650.html
how much ram do you have installed? are you running the live cd or is it on your hard drive.if installed take a look in control panel -sessions to see what starts up and untick what you don't need.i notice that some distros have a verbose mode which can be used when booting but not mint sadly.
EDIT
try booting in recovery mode.

Installed, but the liveCD takes similarly long. And it is not the drive. The drive stop, actually even the streamer on the splash screen freezes, and something is happening for like several minutes. Then everything continues as normal: the CD or HDD spins up again, the streamer starts running back and forth (afterwards switches to growing from left to right), and everything is fine.

was the first thing I did

It appears to be the CD. It is stuck on something:

Code: Select all

Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20

This was a bug i found when making Linux Mint 6 XFCE CE.
It wasn't really bad for me in 5 but in 6 it would take 4 min too boot.
It was because i wasn't using the network manager that Ubuntu wanted me to use.
I found editiing /etc/network/interfaces fixed this.
You only need the top 2 lines and everything else can be removed.(unless you added edited it).
The next reboot should be faster.

I hope you mean MB not KB.
